First-past-the-post (FPTP)—also called choose-one, first-preference plurality (FPP), or simply plurality—is a single-winner voting rule. Enid Bennett (politician)
Enid Maude Bennett, OJ, CD (18 May 1931 – 22 December 2017) was a Jamaican politician, representing the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), who served as Member of Parliament for 30 continuous years until her retirement in 1997. Early life and education Bennett was born in Linstead, St. Catherine on 18 May 1931. She was the daughter of James Bennett and Margaret Gordon (née Nattoo). Bennett commenced her education at Linstead Primary School and later attended St. Helen Commercial School. Political career Bennett was first elected Parish Councillor for the Sligoville electoral division in the 1956 Parish Council Elections, and later became Member of Parliament for Central St. Catherine in 1967, before moving to represent St. Catherine West Central in 1976. Bennett served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government between 1980 and 1984, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security between 1984 and 1989. J. Patterson won 50 of the 60 seats defeating the main opposition Jamaica Labour Party. Future Prime Minister Andrew Holness entered parliament at this election. Background Prime Minister P. J. Patterson announced on 27 November that the election would be held on 18 December. Christopher Tufton
Christopher Charles Tufton is a Jamaican politician. A member of the governing Jamaica Labour Party, and Jamaica's Minister of Health and Wellness. He previously served as the Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce from July 2011 to December 2011, having previously served as the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries since 2007. Tufton served as the Member of Parliament for parliamentary constituency St. Elizabeth South Western from 2007 up until his defeat in 2011. In 2016 Tufton won the St. Catherine West Central seat against the PNP's Clinton Clarke and thus being returned to the Lower House. In March of 2016 he was appointed as Minister of Health and Wellness, He currently still serves that post. He was the president of the Generation 2000 and a lecturer in the Department of Management Studies, UWI, Mona. In 2011 Tufton lost his seat to his PNP counterpart Hugh Buchanan by 13 votes. General elections were held in Jamaica on 3 September 2007. They had originally been scheduled for 27 August 2007 but were delayed due to Hurricane Dean. The preliminary results indicated a slim victory for the opposition Jamaican Labour Party (JLP) led by Bruce Golding, which grew by two seats from 31–29 to 33-27 after official recounts. The JLP defeated the People's National Party after eighteen years of unbroken governance.
