Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier
Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier () is a municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region of Quebec, Canada, located in the Jacques-Cartier River valley. It has been home to the Canadian Forces Base Valcartier since World War I. History In 1647, Robert Giffard de Moncel was granted the Saint-Gabriel seignory that became property of the Jesuits in 1667 and Crown property in 1800. Around 1816, John Neilson (1776-1848), together with Andrew Stuart and Louis Moquin, Quebec lawyers, obtained some 50 concessions in the Saint-Gabriel seignory. This marked the start of the Val-Cartier settlement that was intended to receive Irish and Scottish colonizers. In 1832, the Parish of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier was formed when it was detached from Sainte-Catherine(-de-la-Jacques-Cartier) and Charlesbourg. John Neilson (Canadian Politician)
John Neilson (July 17, 1776 – February 1, 1848) was a journalist, publisher and politician in Lower Canada (now Quebec). Born in Scotland, he emigrated to Lower Canada in 1791 at age 15, to work in his older brother's publishing company in Quebec City. On his brother's death a few years later, he inherited the business. Neilson became one of the leading publishers and booksellers in Lower Canada and in Upper Canada (now Ontario), selling books in both French and English. He was the editor of the newspaper ''Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph, La Gazette de Québec / The Quebec Gazette'', published in French and in English. Once well-established financially, Neilson entered politics. 2nd Canadian Division Support Base Valcartier (2 CDSB Valcartier), formerly known as and commonly referred to as Canadian Forces Base Valcartier (CFB Valcartier), is a Canadian Forces base located in the municipality of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, north northwest of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Jacques-Cartier River
The Jacques-Cartier River is a river in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is 161 km long and its source is Jacques-Cartier Lake in Laurentides Wildlife Reserve, and flows in a predominantly southern direction before ending in the Saint Lawrence River at Donnacona, about 30 km upstream from Quebec City. Shannon, Quebec
Shannon is a city in Quebec, Canada, and is along the Jacques-Cartier River northwest of Quebec City. It was formed in December 1946, when it separated from the territory of Sainte-Catherine-de-Fossambault, following protests of this part of the population against the municipal taxes. The community was founded by Irish immigrants and once contained a substantial English-speaking population though it is today chiefly French-speaking. Its longtime principal economic activity was the exploitation of wood bound for the shipyards of Quebec. The town is located near CFB Valcartier, an important Canadian military base.
