Ivan Ivanovich Safronov (russian: link=no, Иван Иванович Сафронов; born 18 May 1990) is a Russian journalist. He was arrested in July 2020 on charges of treason related to allegedly disclosing state secrets. A Kremlin spokesman claimed following the arrest that "As far as we know this is not linked to his prior journalistic activity in any way." ''Kommersant'' called the charges of treason "absurd". Afanasy Ivanovich Safronov (; 22 October 1903 – 18 March 1944) was a Red Army major general who held division command during World War II. Safronov rose to division chief of staff in the prewar Red Army. He fought in the Baltic defensive operation and the Siege of Leningrad before taking command of the 48th Rifle Division in September 1941. Safronov led the division in the defense of the Oranienbaum bridgehead and the Krasnoye Selo–Ropsha offensive. He died of wounds received in the Narva offensive during March 1944. Valentina Ivanovna Safronova (; 1918 – 1 May 1943) was a Soviet partisan and intelligence officer who engaged in reconnaissance and sabotage until she was captured and killed by the Gestapo. On 8 May 1965, over twenty years after her death, she was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Early life Safronova was born in 1918 to a Russian family in the village of Baksheevo, but her family moved to village of Lgovsky shortly after her birth, and in 1921 the village was officially incorporated into the city of Bryansk proper.
