Safeguard Defenders
Safeguard Defenders is a not-for profit human rights organization which monitors disappearances in China. It was co-founded by Michael Caster. Founded in 2016 in Madrid, Spain, it operates as a private foundation. In 2009, activists Peter Dahlin and Michael Caster, from Sweden and the United States respectively, founded China Action, an NGO promoting human rights in China. After some years of low profile activity, the foundation was re-established in Madrid under the name Safeguard Defenders, with a wider scope on Asia, but specialized on China. In October 2022, Safeguard Defenders published a report on China's Ministry of Public Security's clandestine police stations around the world. In November 2022, NewsGuard reported that a pro-Chinese government disinformation campaign on Twitter had been launch against Safeguard Defenders. The Ministry of Public Security () is a government ministry of the People's Republic of China responsible for public and political security. It oversees more than 1.9 million of the country's law enforcement officers and as such the vast majority of the People's Police (). Chinese Police Overseas Service Stations
The term "overseas service station" ( zh, c=海外服务站, p=hǎiwài fúwù zhàn) and the associated phrase "Overseas 110" or "110 Overseas" ( zh, c=海外110, p=hǎiwài yībǎiyīshí, l=abroad 110; alluding to China's emergency number for the police, 110) refers to various extralegal offices established by China's Ministry of Public Security in other countries. The Chinese government has claimed they were established to provide Chinese nationals in foreign countries with bureaucratic assistance, such as document renewals, and to fight transnational crime, such as online fraud. NewsGuard is a journalism and technology tool that rates the credibility of news and information websites and tracks online misinformation. It operates a browser extension and mobile apps for consumers as well as services for businesses, including a brand safety tool for advertisers and services for search engines, social media apps, cybersecurity firms, and government agencies. NewsGuard's trust ratings for news websites are based on nine criteria related to a source's journalistic practices. Based on the nine criteria, each site is assigned a trust score of 0-100 and an overall rating of red (generally untrustworthy) or green (generally trustworthy). Disinformation
Disinformation is false information deliberately spread to deceive people. It is sometimes confused with misinformation, which is false information but is not deliberate. The English word ''disinformation'' comes from the application of the Latin prefix ''dis-'' to ''information'' making the meaning "reversal or removal of information". The rarely used word had appeared with this usage in print at least as far back as 1887. Some consider it a loan translation of the Russian ''dezinformatsiya'', derived from the title of a KGB black propaganda department.
