Sadanand Varde
Sadanand Varde (November 6, 1925 – January 29, 2007) was an Indian socialist leader, politician, and freedom fighter from Maharashtra. He served as the Education Minister of Maharashtra State in the government led by Sharad Pawar's Progressive Democratic Front in 1978. Varde was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Bandra constituency as a member of the Samajwadi Party during the same year. Career Varde started his career as a professor of economics at R. D. National College in Bandra. Actively involved in the Quit India movement as a college student, he faced imprisonment for 18 months during the 1942 Quit India movement. He spent 18 months in jail during the Emergency, imposed by Indira Gandhi. Sadanand Varde served as a corporator in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for over a decade. Indira Gandhi
Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (; ''née'' Nehru; 19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984) was an Indian politician and a central figure of the Indian National Congress. She was elected as third prime minister of India in 1966 and was also the first and, to date, only female prime minister of India. Marathwada () is a proposed state and geographical region of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was formed during the Nizam's rule and was part of the then Hyderabad State. The region coincides with the Aurangabad division of Maharashtra. It borders the states of Karnataka and Telangana, and it lies to the west of the Vidarbha and east of North Maharashtra regions of Maharashtra. The largest city of Marathwada is Aurangabad. 1993 Latur Earthquake
The 1993 Latur earthquake struck India at 3:56 am local time ( UTC+05:30) on 30 September. The main area affected is the districts of Latur and Osmanabad, including the Ausa block of Latur and Omerga of Osmanabad in Maharashtra, Western India. Fifty-two villages were demolished in the intraplate earthquake. It measured 6.2 on the moment magnitude scale, and approximately 10,000 people died, whilst another 30,000 were injured. The earthquake's hypocenter was around 10 km deep – relatively shallow – allowing shock waves to cause more damage. It is considered the deadliest earthquake in the stable continental crust to have occurred in recorded history. ''Sadhana'' () is a Socialist Marathi weekly publication that was established by Pandurang Sadashiv Sane (Sane Guruji), a leader of Rashtra Seva Dal on 15 August 1948. It was edited by Marathi writer Shankar Dattatraya Javdekar from 1950 to 1952. Yadunath Thatte became ''Sadhanas editor in 1956 and continued to lead it until 1982. G.P. Pradhan was the next editor of the weekly. In the early 1970s the magazine provided a forum for voices from the Dalit Panther movement, who were revolting against the treatment of low castes in Indian society. Some of the Dalit writings published by the magazine were considered to be inflammatory by the middle class and even led to calls to ban the concerned issues.
