Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA) were formerly known as the Rochester Royals, Cincinnati Royals, the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, and the Kansas City Kings. While the Kings were created first as a semiprofessional team in 1923 with the Rochester Seagrams, their professional roots began in 1945 with their arrival in the National Basketball League, where it won the title in their first season. They joined the Basketball Association of America in 1948, with the league soon rebranding itself as the NBA. The Royals won the NBA title in 1951. After reaching the postseason ten times in twelve professional seasons, they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1957. After fifteen years of mediocrity, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1972, for which they played games in Kansas City and in Omaha, Nebraska. The Sacramento Kings are an American professional basketball team based in Sacramento, California. The Kings compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Pacific Division (NBA), Pacific Division of the Western Conference (NBA), Western Conference. 1946–47 Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons Season
The 1946–47 Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons season was the sixth season of the franchise in the National Basketball League. For the first time Fort Wayne had to play without four time league MVP Bobby McDermott who left the team mid season. The team also lost star guard Buddy Jeannette during the off season but did get the return of power forward Blackie Towery. The Pistons finished the season second place in the eastern division and defeated the Toledo Jeeps 3–2 in the opening round of the playoffs before falling to the Rochester Royals in 3 games. 1946–47 Syracuse Nationals Season
The 1946–47 Syracuse Nationals season was the first season of the franchise. They competed in the National Basketball League. Founding of franchise and season highlights In May 1946, Danny Biasone and George Mingin deposited $1,000 with the National Basketball League (NBL) in hopes of securing a franchise for Syracuse. Biasone said a professional team would be formed with home games played at the West Jefferson Street Armory, even if the NBL declined to grant a franchise. In the absence of a league affiliation, the team would play as an independent. Syracuse was one of five cities competing for a single new NBL franchise. The other cities that had applied were St. Louis, Milwaukee, Toledo and Anderson, Indiana. Les Harrison (basketball)
Lester J. Harrison (August 20, 1904 – December 23, 1997) was an American professional basketball player, coach, and team owner and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Career Harrison was born in Rochester, New York. He attended East High School and led the high school to the championship over West High. The victory inspired him to get in the basketball business. In 1923, Harrison began playing, coaching, and organizing semi-professional basketball, working for the Rochester Seagrams, which were later known as the Rochester Ebers in order to appease the newspapers (resistant to liquor advertising). In 1945, with his brother Joseph (Jack), Harrison founded his own semi-pro team, the Rochester Pros; in 1946, the franchise changed its name to Royals and began play in the National Basketball League (NBL). NBL (United States) Rookie Of The Year Award
The National Basketball League Rookie of the Year Award was an annual National Basketball League (NBL) award given to the top rookie(s) of the regular season in each of the twelve years the league existed. The Rookie of the Year was selected by sports writers, broadcasters, coaches, and managers. Despite the dozens of teams that played in the NBL through its history, three of them collectively dominated the award's recipients. The Indianapolis Kautskys and Sheboygan Red Skins had three winners each, while the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots had two, for a combined eight of the twelve awards bestowed (66.7%). William "Red" Holzman (August 10, 1920 – November 13, 1998) was an American professional basketball player and coach. He is best known as the head coach of the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1967 to 1977, and again from 1978 to 1982. Holzman helped lead the Knicks to two NBA championships in 1970 and 1973, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986. 1945–46 Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons Season
The 1945–46 Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons season was the fifth season of the franchise in the National Basketball League. The team was looking to return to the finals for a fifth consecutive year and win their third straight title. The team once again claimed the best regular season record by winning 26 games and Bobby McDermott was awarded his fourth and last NBL MVP Award. Both Buddy Jeannette and Robert McDermott were named to the All-NBL first team. Going into the playoffs the Pistons met the Rochester Royals in the first round but were upset in four games making it the first season in team history where they failed to reach the finals. This season marked the end of the Pistons NBL dominance as both McDermott and Jeannette left the franchise within the next year.
