Sabina (oil)
Sabina is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) that applies to the extra virgin olive oil produced in the Sabina region. This area approximately covers the territory originally occupied by the ancient Sabines tribe in the Province of Rome and the Province of Rieti. It is considered to be the first Italian PDO to gain the status, later being followed by Aprutino Pescarese, Brisighella, Collina di Brindisi and Canino. Production area: Sabina The production area of the PDO extra virgin olive oil is mainly in two provinces, Rieti and Rome, and follows the borders of the ancient Sabine territory. Techniques used to produce the oil are almost the same as in pre-Roman times with necessary technological innovations. Cottanello
Cottanello is a '' comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about north of Rome and about west of Rieti. An elaborate ancient Roman villa was discovered here in 1968 in the hamlet of Collesecco (evocative of an arid and stony place) in the valley below the historic centre of Cottanello. Poggio Mirteto
Poggio Mirteto is a ''comune'' (municipality) and former Catholic bishopric in Sabina in the Central Italian region Lazio (Latium). Administratively Poggio Mirteto is in the province of Rieti (formerly part of the province of Perugia) and geographically this municipality is about northeast of Rome and about southwest of Rieti. According to Giuseppe Marocco's 1833 book the name Poggio Mirteto means the "knoll with plenty of Myrtus plants" because in its territory there would be plenty of Myrtus plants (called ''mirto'' in Italian, which is where the adjective ''mirteto'' comes from) and the old town was built on a knoll which in Italian is translated with the toponym Poggio. Poggio Catino
Poggio Catino is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about northeast of Rome and about southwest of Rieti. As of 31 December 2011, it had a population of 1,335 and an area of . History The village was created at the end of the 11th century, above the Moricone hill, to find a larger building space than that of the nearby village of Catino, founded in the 7th century, and nowadays a hamlet of it. The toponym itself describes the topography of the built-up area: a hillock (''poggio'') above a basin (''catino'').
