Sabiceeae is a tribe of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae and contains about 164 species in 7 genera. Its representatives are found in tropical Africa, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and from Mexico to tropical America. The Rubiaceae are a family of flowering plants, commonly known as the coffee, madder, or bedstraw family. It consists of terrestrial trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs that are recognizable by simple, opposite leaves with interpetiolar stipules and sympetalous actinomorphic flowers. The family contains about 13,500 species in about 620 genera, which makes it the fourth-largest angiosperm family. Rubiaceae has a cosmopolitan distribution; however, the largest species diversity is concentrated in the tropics and subtropics. Virectaria
''Virectaria'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. The genus, known as ''Virecta'' until 1952, consists exclusively of tropical African species. It is a Guineo-Congolian genus, having its highest diversity in Lower Guinea but it also occurs in the Zambezian Region. Verdcourt provided a revision in which he defined five species but three more were added later. In 2001, a detailed morphological and anatomical study of the genus was conducted and a taxonomic survey and a key to the species was provided. Description All species are herbaceous or semi-woody and possess a fruit dehiscence type that is unique for the family; the splitting into one persistent and one deciduous valve allows recognizing the genus at first glance. Birgitta Bremer
Birgitta Bremer (born 17 January 1950), Swedish botanist and academic, is professor at Stockholm University, and director of the Bergius Botanic Garden. Career Professor Bremer obtained her doctorate in botany in 1980 from Stockholm University, with the thesis "Taxonomy of mosses of the genus Schistidium". In 1981 she was appointed docent at Stockholm University; 1983–1990 she was an instructor of systematics. Between 1990 and 2000 she was systematic botany instructor; in 2000–2001 she served as dean of the department of systematics; 2000–2004 – professor of plant molecular systematics. Since 2002 she has been director of the Bergius Fund and director of Botanical Garden. Since 2004 she has been a professor of systematics at Stockholm University. Early life and education Smith was born in Norwich in 1759, the son of a wealthy wool merchant. He displayed a precocious interest in the natural world. During the early 1780s he enrolled in the medical course at the University of Edinburgh where he studied chemistry under Joseph Black and natural history under John Walker. He then moved to London in 1783 to continue his studies. Smith was a friend of Sir Joseph Banks, who was offered the entire collection of books, manuscripts and specimens of the Swedish natural historian and botanist Carl Linnaeus following the death of his son Carolus Linnaeus the Younger. Adam Afzelius (8 October 175020 January 1837) was a Swedish botanist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. Afzelius was born at Larv in Västergötland in 1750. He was appointed teacher of oriental languages at Uppsala University in 1777, and in 1785 demonstrator of botany. In 1793 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. In 1800, Adam Afzelius became member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber (17 January 1739 in Weißensee, Thuringia – 10 December 1810 in Erlangen), often styled J.C.D. von Schreber, was a German Natural history, naturalist. Career He was appointed professor of'' materia medica'' at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, University of Erlangen in 1769. Carl Daniel Friedrich Meissner (1 November 1800 – 2 May 1874) was a Swiss botanist. Biography Born in Bern, Switzerland on 1 November 1800, he was christened Meisner but later changed the spelling of his name to Meissner. For most of his 40-year career he was Professor of Botany at University of Basel. He made important contributions to the botanical literature, including the publication of the comprehensive work ''Plantarum Vascularum Genera'', and publications of monographs on the families Polygonaceae (especially the genus '' Polygonum''), Lauraceae, Proteaceae, Thymelaeaceae and Hernandiaceae.
