A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek ; sometimes also ''hypocoristic''), or pet name, is a name used to show affection for a person. It may be a diminutive form of a person's name, such as ''Izzy'' for Isabel or ''Bob (given name), Bob'' for Robert, or it may be unrelated. Stu Laird
Stuart Laird (born July 8, 1960) is a former professional Canadian football defensive tackle who played thirteen seasons for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He is a graduate of the University of Calgary where he was a five-year starter with the Calgary Dinosaurs from 1978 to 1982, and earned a bachelor of arts degree in Economics. Laird's playing achievements include 1985 Stampeder special teams player of the year, 1988 and 1991 CFLPA outstanding defensive line, 1992 Grey Cup Champion, 1995 CFL West All-Star and retired with the most QB sacks by a Canadian born player in CFL history (now 3rd). His number 75 jersey was retired in 1996. Laird ranks 3rd on the Stamps all-time sack list and was inducted onto the Stampeders Wall of Fame in September 2014. Stuart Gordon Whittingham (born 10 February 1994) is a Scottish former cricketer who played for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club as well as representing his country in One Day Internationals. Whittingham has also represented Loughborough MCC University, Sussex and the Scotland Under-19 cricket team. Primarily a right-arm fast-medium bowler, he also bats right handed. Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe (23 June 1940 – 10 April 1962) was a British painter and musician from Edinburgh, Scotland, best known as the original bass guitarist of the Beatles. Sutcliffe left the band to pursue his career as a painter, having previously attended the Liverpool College of Art. Sutcliffe and John Lennon are credited with inventing the name "Beetles" (sic), as they both liked Buddy Holly's band, the Crickets. Stuart Leonard Miller (December 26, 1927 – January 4, 2015), nicknamed The Butterfly Man, was a pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1952–56), Philadelphia Phillies (1956), New York/San Francisco Giants (1957–62), Baltimore Orioles (1963–67) and Atlanta Braves (1968).
