SS Mabel (1882)
SS ''Mabel'' was a small cruise ship launched in 1883 and owned by James Hornsby, proprietor of the Loch Maree Hotel, that provided tourists a tour of landlocked Loch Maree, Scotland. ''Mabel'' also served as a small passenger ferry between Poolewe (Tollie Bay pier ) and Kinlochewe (Rhu Noa pier ), which connected visitors arriving by coach from Achnasheen railway station. Hornsby sold ''Mabel'' to David MacBrayne, whose steamship operations covered all of west Scotland, in 1887. MacBrayne promoted the vessel as a tourist attraction and it served until 1911, when it was moored up beside Loch Maree Hotel. In 1913 the vessel was beached near to the hotel, where it remained until about 2000. A model of ''Mabel'' can be seen in the Gairloch Museum, however some photos show the ''Mabel'' with slight differences: the model and some photographs show the vessel with tiller steering, while another image, undated, seems to show passengers at the stern of the ship with a crew member a ... Gairloch Museum
Gairloch Museum () is an independent museum in the Wester Ross region of Scotland. The museum is located in the Highland village of Gairloch, in Achtercairn. The museum moved to a new site in 2019- a former Cold War building that had been converted to house exhibitions. The following year the museum was named one of the five winners of the 2020 Art Fund, ArtFund Museum of the Year, Museum of the Year Award. History The museum opened in 1977, with the organisation set up as local branch of the Ross and Cromarty Heritage Society. This came about through the efforts of Sylvia Murdoch, her husband Morton Murdoch and others, such as Kay Matheson. This would later become the Gairloch & District Heritage Society and then the Gairloch & District Heritage Company Ltd. They applied and were successful in converting part of the existing farm steading in Achtercairn to form a heritage museum and clubs rooms for members during the winter months for lectures and films, among others.
