SS Fulton (1855)
The ''Fulton'' was a wooden hulled, brig-rigged, sidewheel steamer built in 1855 by the Smith and Dimon Shipyard at New York City for the New York & Havre Steam Navigation Company. She was chartered by the Union Army in the Army Transport Service, during the American Civil War. She returned to transatlantic passenger and freight service after the Civil War. Construction The ''Fulton'' was built in 1855, by Smith and Dimon Shipyard of New York. She was launched on September 4, 1855. Her sister ship ''Arago'' was built by Westervelt & Sons. They were both constructed in 1855 for the New York & Havre Steam Navigation Company, then under contract with the United States Government to deliver mail between New York and Le Havre, France. Robert Fulton
Robert Fulton (November 14, 1765 – February 24, 1815) was an American engineer and inventor who is widely credited with developing the world's first commercially successful steamboat, the (also known as ''Clermont''). In 1807, that steamboat traveled on the Hudson River with passengers from New York City to Albany, New York, Albany and back again, a round trip of , in 62 hours. The success of his steamboat changed river traffic and trade on major American rivers. In 1800, Fulton had been commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, leader of France, to attempt to design a submarine; he then produced , the first practical submarine in history. Samuel Samuels
Captain Samuel S. Samuels (8 March 182318 May 1908) was a 19th-century American sea captain best known for command of the famous clipper ship the Dreadnought. The fastest sailing ship of the time was quite famous and Captain Samuels was also renowned as the captain and designer of the ship. In 1859 he set a new record for New York to Liverpool of only 9 days, 17 hours. Twice Captain Samuels sailed faster than steamer ships which were increasingly popular for freight during this time. He was born in Philadelphia on 8 March 1823. According to his autobiography, works of James Fenimore Cooper and Frederick Marryat inspired him to run away to sea at the age of 11. As a youth Samuels is shanghaied onto a ship bound for Liverpool. He learns the skills of the seaman, becomes an officer, and then a captain by age twenty-one. 14th Regiment (New York State Militia)
The 14th Regiment New York State Militia (also called the 14th Brooklyn Chasseurs and officially known during the American Civil War as 84th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment) was a volunteer militia regiment from the City of Brooklyn, New York (state), New York. It is primarily known for its service in the American Civil War from April 1861 to 6 May 1864, although it later served in the Spanish–American War and World War I (as part of the 106th Regiment). In the Civil War, the regiment was made up of a majority of Abolitionism in the United States, abolitionists from the Brooklyn area. It was led first by Colonel Alfred M.
