SROSS-C2
SROSS-C2 or Stretched Rohini Satellite Series C2 was a satellite developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation. It conducted research on Gamma Ray Bursts in Low Earth Orbit. It was launched on 4 May 1994 using an ASLV rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The first two satellites in the SROSS series failed to attain orbit. The third one attained a much lower orbit than planned. SROSS-C2 is thus the first fully successful, and the last satellite in the series. Design Magnetic Torquer and Magnetic Bias Control Sensors, Magnetometer, Twin-slit Sun sensor and Temperature sensors helped the satellite to be spin stabilized. This was done using monopropellant, Hydrazine based with six thrusters each capable of delivering 1 Newton force. It has an octagonal structure. Body mounted and deployable solar panels provided 45 watts of power, with NiCd battery of 12-amp hours. S-band and VHF bands were used for communication. The Stretched Rohini Satellite Series (SROSS) are a series of satellites developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation as follow ons to the Rohini Satellites for conducting astrophysics, Earth Remote Sensing, and upper atmospheric monitoring experiments as well as for new and novel application-oriented missions. These satellites were the payload of the developmental flights of the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle. Satellites in series SROSS A And SROSS B The first two satellites in the series did not make it into orbit due to launch vehicle failure. SROSS-A carried two retro-reflectors for laser tracking. SROSS-B carried two instruments; a West German Monocular Electro Optical Stereo Scanner (MEOSS) and ISRO's 20-3000keV Gamma-ray Burst Experiment (GRB). Satish Dhawan Space Centre - SDSC (formerly Sriharikota Range - SHAR) is a rocket launch centre ( spaceport) operated by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It is located in Sriharikota, Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh. Sriharikota Range was renamed in 2002 after ISRO's former chairman Satish Dhawan. History Sriharikota island was chosen in 1969 for a satellite launching station. The centre became operational in 1971 when an RH-125 sounding rocket was launched. The first attempted launch of an orbital satellite, Rohini 1A aboard a Satellite Launch Vehicle, took place on 10 August 1979, but due to a failure in thrust vectoring of the rocket's second stage, the satellite's orbit decayed on 19 August 1979. The Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle or Advanced Satellite Launch Vehicle, also known as ASLV, was a small-lift launch vehicle five-stage solid-fuel rocket developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to place 150 kg satellites into LEO. This project was started by India during the early 1980s to develop technologies needed for a payload to be placed into a geostationary orbit. Its design was based on Satellite Launch Vehicle. ISRO did not have sufficient funds for both the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle programme and the ASLV programme at the same time and the ASLV programme was terminated after the initial developmental flights. InterPlanetary Network
The InterPlanetary Network (IPN) is a group of spacecraft equipped with gamma ray burst (GRB) detectors. By timing the arrival of a burst at several spacecraft, its precise location can be found. The precision for determining the direction of a GRB in the sky is improved by increasing the spacing of the detectors, and also by more accurate timing of the reception. Typical spacecraft baselines of about one AU (astronomical unit) and time resolutions of tens of milliseconds can determine a burst location within several arcminutes, allowing follow-up observations with other telescopes. Rationale Gamma rays are too energetic to be focused with mirrors. The rays penetrate mirror materials instead of reflecting.
