SPÖ
The Social Democratic Party of Austria ( , SPÖ) is a social democratic political party in Austria. Founded in 1889 as the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria (, SDAPÖ) and later known as the Socialist Party of Austria () from 1945 until 1991, the party is the oldest extant political party in Austria. Along with the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), it is one of the country's two traditional major parties. It is positioned on the centre-left on the political spectrum. Since June 2023, the party has been led by Andreas Babler. It is currently the third largest of five parties in the National Council, having won 41 of 183 seats and 21.1% of the popular vote in the 2024 Austrian legislative election. It holds seats in the legislatures of all nine states; of these, it is the largest party in three (Burgenland, Carinthia, and Vienna.) Socialist Youth Austria
The Socialist Youth Austria (, SJÖ, also SJ) is the largest socialist youth organisation in Austria. Founded in 1894 as a club for apprentice protection, it was initially called Association of Young Workers (, VJA). Although not part of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), there is a close relationship between the two organisations. The SJÖ is actively integrated within the committees of the SPÖ. The program of the organisation adopted in 2004 is based on scientific socialism and Marxism, which positions it more to the left than the social democratic SPÖ. The SJÖ is member of the Young European Socialists (YES; formerly ECOSY) and the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY), which has its headquarters in the same building as the SJÖ. Austrian People's Party
The Austrian People's Party ( , ÖVP ) is a Christian-democratic and liberal-conservative political party in Austria. Since January 2025, the party has been led by Christian Stocker (as an acting leader). It is currently the second-largest party in the National Council, with 51 of the 183 seats, and won 26.3% of votes cast in the 2024 legislative election. It holds seats in all nine state legislatures, and is part of government in seven, of which it leads six. The ÖVP is a member of the International Democracy Union and the European People's Party. It sits with the EPP group in the European Parliament; of Austria's 19 MEPs, 5 are members of the ÖVP. It is the second largest party in Europe by membership. 2024 Austrian Legislative Election
General election, Legislative elections were held in Austria on 29 September 2024 to elect the 28th National Council (Austria), National Council, the lower house of Austria's bicameral parliament. The election saw the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) place first, winning 28.8% of the vote and achieving the best result in the party's history. This was the first time that a far-right party won the most seats in a legislative election in Austria after World War II. Junge Generation (SPÖ)
The Young Generation (German language, German: ''Junge Generation'', JG) within the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) is one of its three departments, alongside Education and Woman, Women. Acting as the political voice for SPÖ members aged 18 to 38, every individual within that age range is automatically considered a member of the JG. History The Junge Generation (JG) first became active in 1956 and was later officially established on January 22, 1958, to better represent the interests of young people within the SPÖ. Andreas Babler
Andreas "Andi" Babler (born 25 February 1973) is an Austrian politician who has been the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) since June 2023 and vice-chancellor of Austria since March 2025. He has been described as being a left-wing populist. Early life Babler grew up in a Semperit family in Möllersdorf, part of the municipality of Traiskirchen. He went to technical college in Mödling and subsequently worked in machine construction, as a warehouse labourer, and in a mineral water bottling plant. After starting his career in politics, he studied political communication at the University for Continuing Education Krems (MSc). Eva-Maria Holzleitner
Eva-Maria Holzleitner (born 5 May 1993) is an Austrian politician of the Social Democratic Party who has served as the Minister of Women, Science and Research in the Stocker government since 2025. She was first elected to the National Council in the 2017 legislative election, and was re-elected in the 2019 election. Since 2021, she has served as a deputy leader of the Social Democratic Party and as leader of its women's wing SPÖ Frauen. Austria is a federation, federal republic consisting of nine federal states. The European Commission calls them provinces. Austrian federal states can pass laws that stay within the limits of the constitution, and each federal state has representatives in the main Austrian parliament. Geography The majority of the land area in the federal states of Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Vienna, and Burgenland is situated in the Danube valley and thus consists almost completely of accessible and easily arable terrain. Peter Kaiser
Peter Kaiser (born 4 December 1958) is an Austrian politician of the Social Democratic Party of Austria, Social Democratic Party. Since March 2013 he is List of governors of Carinthia, governor of Carinthia and since March 2010 also chairman of the SPÖ Carinthia. Andreas Schieder
Andreas Schieder (born 16 April 1969) is an Austrian politician who has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2019. Previously in his career, Schieder served as parliamentary leader of the Social Democratic Party in the National Council. He was also state secretary in the Ministry of Finance in the government of Chancellor Werner Faymann from 2008 to 2013. Selma Yildirim (born 25 August 1969) is an Austrian politician who is a member of the National Council and deputy chairperson of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). Life Yildirim was born in 1969 in Istanbul, Turkey, and moved to Austria as a child. She studied law at the University of Innsbruck. National Council Of Austria
The National Council (, ) is one of the two houses of the Austrian Parliament and is frequently referred to as the lower house. The constitution endows the National Council with far more power than the Federal Council. Responsibilities The National Council is where Austria's federal legislative authority is concentrated; for a bill to become federal law, it must be resolved upon by this chamber. Bills passed by the National Council are sent to the Federal Council for corroboration. If the Federal Council approves of the bill or simply does nothing for eight weeks, the bill has succeeded. If the Federal Council vetoes the bill, the National Council may still force it into law by essentially just passing it again; a National Council resolution overruling a Federal Council objection merely has to meet a higher quorum than a regular resolution.
