SOS Sheikh Secondary School
Pharo Secondary School, Sheikh (formerly known as SOS Sheikh Secondary School or SOS Hermann Gmeiner Sheikh Secondary School) is situated near the town of Sheikh, a three-hour drive from Hargeisa, the capital of the unrecognized state of Somaliland. The once-renowned boarding school was established in British Somaliland and at independence was considered one of the top schools in the country. It is the birth-place of Somalia's former anthem, Soomaaliyeey toosoo, which was composed by the teachers of Sheikh Secondary School. The school accepted a mere 50 students each year for the 31 years (1958–89) before it was destroyed by the Siad Barre regime, admitting 1,550 people over three decades. It was mostly destroyed in fighting in 1989, and had fallen into further disrepair during the Somali Civil War. Sheikh (, , also known as ''Shiikh'' or ''Upper Sheikh''), is a city in central Somaliland (a state in the Horn of Africa that separated from Somalia in 1991 and is not internationally recognized). Mohamed Haji Ibrahim Egal (, ; August 15, 1928 – May 3, 2002) was a Somali politician who served as the president of Somaliland from 1993 to his death in 2002. He previously served as the prime minister of the State of Somaliland between 26 June and 1 July 1960 and as the first prime minister of the Somali Republic for eleven days in 1960 and again from 1967 to 1969. Hussein Abdi Dualeh () is a Somali politician and petroleum engineer. He is the former Minister of Energy & Minerals of Somaliland. Biography Dualeh was born in the Saraar region of Somaliland. At the age of five, he moved with his family to Aden in South Yemen. Upon returning he completed secondary education at SOS Sheikh Secondary School. After graduation he was hired by ADNOC selling lubricants and gasoline. Abdirahman Aw Ali Farrah, nicknamed Tolwaa (, ) is a Somali politician who was the third Vice President of Somaliland from May 1995 to February 1997. History Abdirahman was a high-ranking SNM colonel and one of few non-Isaaq members of the organization, belonging to the Jibril Yonis sub-division of the Gadabuursi Dir clan. Abdirahman contributed to the Somaliland peace process in the aftermath of the Somaliland War of Independence. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (, ; 1 June 1938 – 15 November 2024), known by his nickname Silanyo (), was a Somaliland politician who served as the President of Somaliland from 2010 to 2017. Hargeisa ( ; ; ) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Somaliland, a ''List of states with limited recognition, de facto'' sovereign state in the Horn of Africa, still considered internationally to be part of Somalia. Richard "Dick" Eyeington (November 1 1940 – October 22 2003) and Enid Eyeington (; October 25 1941 – October 22 2003) were a married British couple. Richard and Enid worked as aid workers to Somaliland until their murders in 2003.
