Imouraren Mine
The Imouraren mine is a large mine located in the northern part of Niger in Agadez Region, about south of Arlit. Imouraren represents one of the largest uranium reserves in Niger having estimated reserves of 109.1 million tonnes of ore grading 0.06% uranium. It is the site of a uranium mining project involving French company Areva and SOPaMin (Société du Patrimoine des Mines du Niger on behalf of the government of Niger). Triuranium octoxide (U3O8) is a compound of uranium. It is present as an olive green to black, odorless solid. It is one of the more popular forms of yellowcake and is shipped between mills and refineries in this form. U3O8 has potential long-term stability in a geologic environment. COMINAK (Compagnie minière d'Akokan) is a national uranium mining company of Niger. It is a joint venture between the French company Areva NC and the state of Niger, which operates in the field of mining. Akokan is a mining town in the Arlit Department of the Agadez Region of northern-central Niger. It is located about southwest of Arlit in the Sahara Desert, and roughly north of Agadez. It is considered to be Niger's "second uranium town".
