SNCF Class BB 63400
The SNCF Class BB 63400 was a class of centre cab diesel locomotives built for SNCF between 1959 and 1960 by Brissonneau et Lotz. The class consisted of 23 locomotives numbered 63401– 63423. Similar to the more powerful Class BB 63500, the construction was financed under the Eurofima arrangements. Brissonneau Et Lotz
Brissonneau et Lotz was a French locomotive engineering company, engaged in the manufacture of railway locomotives and wagons. The company was also a supplier of rolling stock to the Paris Metro, constructing in 1951 the first metro trains in the world to be equipped with rubber tyres. In 1972 it was absorbed into Alstom, becoming Alsthom Groupe Brissonneau. The company was founded in Nantes where it had many of its principal facilities, but by the time it lost its independence it had acquired or established factories and workshops in many parts of France. SNCF Class BB 63500
The SNCF Class BB 63500 are a class of centre cab diesel locomotives built for SNCF between 1956 and 1971 by Brissonneau & Lotz. They are a slightly more powerful version of the BB 63400. A total of 580 locomotives were built. Four units, numbers BB 63896, BB 63901, BB 63902 and BB 63906, were equipped with electric train heating and based at for operating trip workings of passenger trains between Paris Gare du Nord and Paris Gare de Lyon round the Petit Ceinture. Three batches, numbered BB 63721–BB 63750, BB 63811–BB 63855 and BB 63981–BB 64020, totalling 115 locomotives, were equipped for multiple working. Current Use Between 1998 and 1992, a number of locomotives were rebuilt into "master and slave" units. The 25 pairs are designated as class 464800, and are operated by SNCF Logistics. BB 63413 PLATHEE (or ''Plathée'' in French language, French) is a hybrid locomotive that was used for testing on the French rail operator SNCF. PLATHEE is an acronym for "Platform for Energy- Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Hybrid Trains". Overview BB 63413 is a demonstration platform built from a SNCF Class BB 63400, BB 63400 shunting locomotive and introduced in April 2009. The 63413 is designed to perform two functions common to the 63400 platform: switching (hump yard) service and urban service (operation within 20–40 km of a freight station). Prime movers The locomotive uses a downsized diesel engine and a 50 kW HELION fuel cell to provide power. Running tests were done with the fuel cell in September 2009 but it was removed in October 2009 and later running tests were made without it.
