Standard Linear Solid Model
The standard linear solid (SLS), also known as the Zener model after Clarence Zener, is a method of modeling the behavior of a viscoelastic material using a linear combination of springs and dashpots to represent elastic and viscous components, respectively. Often, the simpler Maxwell model and the Kelvin–Voigt model are used. These models often prove insufficient, however; the Maxwell model does not describe creep or recovery, and the Kelvin–Voigt model does not describe stress relaxation. SLS is the simplest model that predicts both phenomena. Definition Materials undergoing strain are often modeled with mechanical components, such as springs (restorative force component) and dashpots (damping component). Connecting a spring and damper in series yields a model of a Maxwell material while connecting a spring and damper in parallel yields a model of a Kelvin–Voigt material.David Roylance, "Engineering Viscoelasticity" (October 24, 2001) https://ocw.mit.edu/course ...

Space Launch System
The Space Launch System (SLS) is an American Super heavy-lift launch vehicle, super heavy-lift Expendable launch system, expendable launch vehicle used by NASA. As the primary launch vehicle of the Artemis program, Artemis Moon landing program, SLS is designed to launch the crewed Orion (spacecraft), Orion spacecraft on a trans-lunar trajectory. The first (and so far only) SLS launch was the uncrewed Artemis I, which took place on 16 November 2022. Development of SLS began in 2011 as a replacement for the retiring Space Shuttle as well as the canceled Ares I and Ares V launch vehicles. SLS was built using existing Shuttle technology, including Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster, solid rocket boosters and RS-25 engines. The rocket has been criticized for its political motivations, seen as a way to preserve jobs and contracts for aerospace companies involved in the Shuttle program at great expense to NASA. The project has faced significant challenges, including mismanagemen ...

Sign Language In Singapore
Singapore Sign Language, or SgSL, is the native sign language used by the deaf and hard of hearing in Singapore, developed over six decades since the setting up of the first school for the Deaf in 1954. Since Singapore's independence in 1965, the Singapore deaf community has had to adapt to many linguistic changes. Today, the local deaf community recognises Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) as a reflection of Singapore's diverse culture. SgSL is influenced by Shanghainese Sign Language (SSL), American Sign Language (ASL), Signing Exact English (SEE-II) and locally developed signs. The total number of deaf clients registered with The Singapore Association For The Deaf (SADeaf), an organisation that advocates equal opportunity for the deaf, is 5,756, as of 2014. Among which, only about one-third stated their knowledge of Sign Language. History of sign language in Singapore 1950s - Beginnings The history of sign language in Singapore can be traced back to 1951 when pioneer de ...

Street League Skateboarding
Street League Skateboarding (SLS) is an international skateboarding tournament series. The league features professional street skateboarders competing for the largest monetary prize in the history of skateboarding, and was founded by professional skateboarder and entrepreneur Rob Dyrdek. California Skateparks designs and builds the SLS courses. History The idea for SLS first arose when Rob Dyrdek was dissatisfied with the state of professional street skateboarding competitions. Seeking to address the flaws of the existing system, Dyrdek developed the SLS. During its launch in 2010, Dyrdek said: "It has been a dream of mine to create a professional tour that bridges the gap between true street skateboarding and contest skating, which to date has been fragmented and misguided." The inaugural year of SLS featured a four-stop arena tour that began at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona, Glendale, Arizona on August 28, 2010. The other venues for the inaugural tour were the Citiz ...

Space Launch System (Turkey)
The space program of Turkey is the space policy implemented by Turkey to further its interests in aerospace. Turkey first began developing its space program in 1993, and it has been under the authority of the Turkish Space Agency since 2018. Turkey has launched several satellites, and its current objective is to send a lander to the Moon by 2026. History The space program of Turkey developed as part of the Turkish Science and Technology Policy under the authority of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey in 1993, which designated space technology as one of the primary fields of technology. Prior to that, Turkey became one of the founding members of EUMETSAT as early as 1984. The Turkish Air Force was tasked with making recommendations on a national space agency in 2001. Turkey signed a cooperation agreement with ESA in 2004. In 2018, Turkish Space Agency was founded by Presidential decree. The stated objectives of the Turkish Space Agency include devel ...

Space Launching System
The Space Launching System, or Space Launcher System, (SLS), was a 1960s-era design program of the US Air Force for a family of launch vehicles based around a set of common components. After a series of studies in the late 1950s, the Air Force had concluded that the maximum efficiency would be gained by using only liquid hydrogen fuel for upper stages, which demanded the use of boosters based on segmented solid fuel rockets. By combining one of three upper stages with three different diameters of solids built to any length needed, the SLS provided wide flexibility in launch capability. The SLS was one of two programs being designed at different divisions within the Air Force, with the ultimate aim of providing the launch services for the X-20 Dyna Soar crewed spaceplane. Its competition was an upgraded version of the Titan I with a new upper stage that produced the Titan C concept. In the end, neither SLS or Titan C would be developed, in its place the new Titan III was selecte ...

Stephenson Locomotive Society
The Stephenson Locomotive Society (SLS) was founded in the UK in Autumn 1909 for the study of rail transport and locomotives. More recently, on 1 January 2017, the SLS became a private company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales 10471004 (Current Registered Office First Floor, Templeback, 10 Temple Back, BRISTOL, BS1 6FL). The Society was originally named ''The Stephenson Society'' in honour of the Stephenson family of engineers and not solely George Stephenson as often, erroneously, stated. In late 1911 the professional engineers seceded from the Society to form the ''Junior Institution of Locomotive Engineers'' and the Society then took its present name. Despite this the SLS has since attracted professional locomotive engineers such as William Stanier, Oliver Bulleid and André Chapelon, as well as amateurs. It also has local Centres which organise meetings and trips of railway interest such as special trains.{{cite book, author=Simmons, Jack, editor=Biddle, ...

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (C197 / R197) is a FMR layout, front mid-engine, 2-seater, limited production sports car developed by the Mercedes-AMG division of German automotive manufacturer Mercedes-Benz, with the assistance of David Coulthard. The car is the successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. SLS stands for "Super Leicht Sport" (Super Light Sport). The SLS was the first Mercedes-Benz automobile designed and built from scratch entirely by AMG. Upon its introduction at the Frankfurt Motor Show#2009, 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the SLS AMG's Mercedes-Benz M159 engine, M159 engine was according to AMG "the world's most powerful Naturally aspirated engine, naturally aspirated production series engine" ever produced. An electric concept car, version of the car, the SLS AMG Electric Drive, was presented at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Production ended in 2014 with the introduction of the SLS AMG GT Final Edition. As compared to its predecessor (the SLR McLaren), the SLS is per M ...
