SLNS Parakramabahu (P351)
SLNS ''Parakramabahu'' (P351) was a Type 037 corvette class submarine chaser of the Sri Lanka Navy. The ship was named after King Parakramabahu I with warrior king of the ancient Sri Lankan Kingdom of Polonnaruwa. Purchased from the People's Liberation Army Navy, she served as the flagship of the fleet from 1996 to 2000. Operational history Since joining the Sri Lankan fleet in 1996 with the objective of enhancing the blue water capability of the navy, she served as the flagship of the navy from 1996 to 2000, and was deployed for patrolling the coastal waters around Sri Lanka to counter gunrunning by the LTTE. Sea Tigers
The Sea Tigers (Tamil: கடற்புலிகள் ''Kaţaṛpulikaḷ'') was the naval wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It was founded in 1984. The Sea Tigers had a number of small but effective suicide bomber vessels. During its existence it had gained a reputation as a capable adversary for the Sri Lankan Navy. Attack on Galle Harbour was a suicide attack carried out by 15 Sea Tigers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on the commercial Galle Harbour and Sri Lanka Navy base SLNS ''Dakshina'' in the tourist town of Galle in southern Sri Lanka. SLNS ''Sayura'' (''Sayura'', in Sinhalese: Sea) is the former flagship and an offshore patrol vessel (OPV) of the Sri Lanka Navy. She was formerly, , a of the Indian Navy sold to Sri Lanka in 2000. Fast Attack Flotilla
The 4th Fast Attack Flotilla (aka ''Dvora Squadron'') is a force element flotilla of the Sri Lanka Navy. The flotilla's mission is to provide heavily armed and fast patrol boat (called fast attack craft or FACs) capability to counter sea tiger movements along the coast and to protect naval and civilian shipping from sea tiger suicide crafts. History The flotilla was formed in the early 1980s with the fast patrol boats to counter LTTE gun running in the Palk Strait from India. With escalation of the Sri Lankan Civil War the Sea Tigers began to pose a threat to the patrol boats of the Navy, with use of small fibreglass boats armed with machine guns. The Battle off the coast of Mullaitivu was a naval battle fought between the Sri Lanka Navy and Sea Tigers on 23 March 1997, off the coast of town of Mullaitivu which has been under control of the LTTE since the Battle of Mullaitivu in 1996. Prelude The LTTE had developed its Sea Tiger arm with suicide units called "Black Sea Tigers" on the lines of their Black Tigers equipped with small high speed crafts packed with explosives that would be rammed into their targets. Type 037 Corvette
The Type 037 corvette is a series 400–500 ton corvette type classes in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy. Unlike western navies, the People's Liberation Army Navy does not have dedicated patrol boats in its inventory.
