SGB Premiership 2021
The SGB Premiership 2021 was the 86th season of the top division, called the SGB Premiership, of the British speedway championship in 2021. Six teams participated. Team changes Changes from the 2019 league season saw the Swindon Robins (the 2019 champions) not fielding a team due to the uncertainty surrounding the Swindon Stadium. The Poole Pirates dropped down to the next league down, the SGB Championship but Sheffield Tigers joined the league after previously competing in the SGB Championship 2019. The league started on 17 May and race meetings were covered by Eurosport. Peterborough Panthers finished top of the regular season table by just one point, overtaking the long time leaders Wolverhampton Wolves. By virtue of finishing top they elected to play Wolves in the play off semi finals rather than the third or fourth placed teams Belle Vue and Sheffield. Ipswich Witches
The Ipswich Witches are a British motorcycle speedway club based at Foxhall Stadium near Ipswich, Suffolk. They compete in the British SGB Premiership. Meetings are staged on most Thursdays from March until October, normally commencing at 7.30pm (first race 7.45pm). The Witches are currently promoted by former Ipswich riders Chris Louis and Ritchie Hawkins. Chris Louis is the son of former rider and promoter John Louis History 1950s Foxhall Stadium was purpose-built for speedway in 1950 and following the cancellation of a meeting on 24 March 1951, the venue first hosted speedway on 14 May 1951, when Ipswich competed against Yarmouth in a challenge match. Steven "Steve" Worrall (born 23 September 1991) is a British speedway rider. Brady Kurtz (born 27 September 1996) is an Australian speedway rider. Biography Born in Cowra, New South Wales, Kurtz isn't the only racer in his family. Brady's older brother Todd Kurtz is a fellow Speedway rider, who has ridden for the Plymouth Devils amongst other teams in the UK. Career Brady got his first break into British Speedway riding in the Premier League with the Somerset Rebels. After 2 impressive years with the Rebels, Kurtz was named in the Poole Pirates team to compete in the 2016 Elite League. This news didn't come as a surprise, as Kurtz had already been the subject of interest from Poole for some time. Dan Bewley
Daniel Bewley (born 10 May 1999) is a British international speedway rider. Career Bewley started riding for the Belle Vue Colts and as a reserve for the Edinburgh Monarchs in 2017. In 2017, he won the List of United Kingdom Speedway League Riders' champions, National League Riders' Championship before being promoted to the senior side (Belle Vue Aces) in 2017. The same year he won the 2017 Conference League Riders' Championship. In 2018, he finished runner-up to Robert Lambert (speedway rider), Robert Lambert in the British Speedway Championship, won the British Under-19 Final and claimed a third place in the second round of the Individual Speedway Junior World Championship, World Under 21 Championship series in Poland. East Of England Showground
The East of England Showground is a large showground area (667,731sqm) located on East of England Way in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England. The Showground is owned by Bellway as of around 2019 and the site currently includes the East of England Arena and Events Centre and a motorcycle speedway stadium. National Speedway Stadium
The National Speedway Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium on Kirkmanshulme Lane, in Gorton, Manchester, England and is the home of the Belle Vue Aces and Belle Vue Colts speedway teams and the Manchester Titans American football team. Origins and opening In 2007, Chris Morton and David Gordon proposed that a new stadium should be built that could be used as the home for the Belle Vue Aces and be used as a national speedway stadium. Seven years later in September 2014, the planning application for the Stadium was approved by Manchester City Council. The planned site on Kirkmanshulme Lane was previously a grassed area containing hockey pitches. Construction on the National Speedway Stadium started in October 2014 and it opened in March 2016 as part of the Belle Vue's £11 million regeneration scheme. Kings Lynn Stars
King's Lynn Stars are a motorcycle speedway team who compete in the SGB Premiership. The nickname "Stars" comes from the defunct Norwich Stars team. The team was founded in 1965 and has been running continually since then, except for 1996 when King's Lynn failed to have a team competing in the British league system. History 1966–1995 The team's inaugural season was the 1966 British League season, where they finished 16th. They managed to finish in third place during the 1972 and 1973 seasons with their strongest riders being Terry Betts and Malcolm Simmons. The first silverware won by the team was the Knockout Cup in 1977. They won the final by the small margin of two points on aggregate, thanks largely to Michael Lee and Betts. The team continued to compete in the highest division until the end of the 1995 season but failed to finish any higher than 4th place. Belle Vue Aces
The Belle Vue Aces are a British speedway club, based in Manchester. The club hold the record of having won the top tier League championship 13 times. They currently compete in the SGB Premiership, racing at The National Speedway Stadium, with home matches usually taking place on Monday evenings. They also run a second team in the National Development League, known as the Belle Vue Colts. History Racing first took place in 1928 at the Belle Vue greyhound stadium in Kirkmanshulme Lane before moving the following year to a specially built stadium nearby on Hyde Road.
