Satara (city)
Satara () (ISO 15919, ISO: Sātārā) is a city located in the Satara District of Maharashtra states and territories of India, state of India, near the confluence of the river Krishna River, Krishna and its tributary, the Venna River, Venna. The city was established in the 16th century and was the seat of the Chhatrapati of the Maratha Kingdom, Shahu I. It is the headquarters of Satara Tehsil, as well as the Satara District. The city gets its name from the seven forts (Sat-Tara) which are around the city. The city is known as a Soldier's city as well as Pensioner's city. The city had a population of 179,147 in 2011. Satara Railway Station
Satara railway station is the main railway station in the Satara district, in the city of Satara, Maharashtra. Its code is STR. The station lies on the Pune–Miraj line of the Central Railways and is administered by the Pune Railway Division. Satara State
The Satara State was a Maratha rump state in India created after the fall of the Maratha Confederacy in 1818 following the Third Anglo-Maratha War, and annexed by the British in 1849 using the Doctrine of lapse. The state was ruled by the Bhonsle dynasty, descendants of Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha kingdom. The first Raja of the state was Pratap Singh who was installed on the throne by the British after they defeated Peshwa Bajirao II in 1818. Pratap Singh was deposed in 1838. His brother, Shahaji succeeded him but died without a natural heir in 1848. At that time, the East India Company government refused to accept Shahaji's adopted son as his successor under the company's Doctrine of lapse, a policy introduced by the then Governor, Lord Dalhousie, and absorbed the territory into the growing British dominion. Satara Melonie Murray (born 1 July 1993) is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for Women's Championship club Sheffield United and the Jamaica women's national football team. She has previously played for English clubs Liverpool and Bristol City, Racing Louisville and Houston Dash of the NWSL, and Kolbotn Fotball of the Norwegian Toppserien. Born in the United States, she represents Jamaica internationally. Born in New York and raised in Texas, Murray won a collegiate national championship with North Carolina Tar Heels before starting her professional career in 2015 with Liverpool of the FA Women's Super League.
