SAPARi
was an online 3D computer graphics, 3-D virtual world service developed in Java (programming language), Java and run by Sony. Users could speak to one another and join chat lobbies by using a dedicated server browser called the Community Place Browser. Upon selecting a server, users would appear in a 3-D virtual world as an Avatar (computing), avatar in the form of a human or an animal. The service's name is a shortening of the name Sampo Park Relaxation. From 1997 to 2001, the service came pre-installed on Sony's Vaio, VAIO series of computers. Vaio
is a Japanese personal computer manufacturer headquartered in Azumino, Nagano, Azumino, Nagano Prefecture. It is owned by Nojima Corporation. Vaio began as a brand of Sony, introduced in 1996, until it offloaded it into an independent company in 2014, with Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) purchasing the Vaio business while Sony maintained a minority stake. Sony still holds the intellectual property rights for the VAIO brand and logo. JIP sold Vaio Corporation to Japanese retailer Nojima in 2025. Etymology Originally an acronym of Video Audio Input Output, later amended to Video Audio Integrated Operation, and later to Visual Audio Intelligent Organizer in 2008 to celebrate the brand's 10th anniversary. The logo, along with the first of the VAIO computers, were designed by Teiyu Goto, supervisor of product design from the Sony Creative Center in Tokyo. PlayStation Home
PlayStation Home was a virtual 3D social networking, social gaming platform developed by Sony Computer Entertainment's London Studio for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) on the PlayStation Network (PSN). It was accessible from the PS3's XrossMediaBar (XMB). Membership was free but required a PSN account. Upon installation, users could choose how much hard disk drive, hard disk space they wished to reserve for Home. Development of the service began in early 2005 and it launched as an open Beta version#Beta, beta on 11 December 2008. Home remained as a perpetual beta until its closure on 31 March 2015. Home allowed users to create a custom Avatar (computing), avatar, which could be groomed realistically. Each avatar was given a personal apartment that users could decorate with free, bought, or won items.
