SAJC Spring Stakes
The Behemoth Stakes is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race at Weight for age, over a distance of 1200 metres, held annually at Morphettville Racecourse, Adelaide, Australia in August. Total prizemoney is A$127,250. History Prior to 2006 the race was held in September. The event is the first Group race in the new racing calendar in South Australia. Race named in 2016 in honour of David R Coles who made a significant contribution to thoroughbred racing industry by the former SAJC Chairman, and pre-eminent Bloodstock agent and consultant. Coles was inducted into the South Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2013. Morphettville Racecourse
Morphettville Racecourse is the main horse racing course for the Australian state of South Australia, incorporating two separate tracks. It is situated in the Adelaide suburb of Morphettville, and is about 10 km from the Adelaide city centre, and is home to the South Australian Jockey Club. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. History The principle of WFA was developed by Admiral Rous, a handicapper with the English Jockey Club. Rous experimented with weights until he arrived at a relationship between age and maturity, expressed in terms of weight. His original scale has undergone only minor alterations since his work in the 1860s. Description Weight for age means that a horse will carry a set weight in accordance with the Weight for Age Scale. South Australian Jockey Club is the principal race club in South Australia. First racing events The first horse racing events in South Australia took place at a well-attended picnic meeting held over 1 and 2 January 1838. In August 1838, riding his grey gelding ''Charley'', Fred Handcock won the first steeplechase event ever held in South Australia. Group races, also known as Pattern races, or Graded races in some jurisdictions, are the highest level of races in Thoroughbred horse racing. Cheltenham Park Racecourse
Cheltenham Park Racecourse was a horse racing track located in the suburb of Cheltenham in Adelaide, South Australia, between around 1921 and 2008. History The Port Adelaide Racing Club began thoroughbred racing at the course and in 1921 the club bought the site on which the course stands for £25,000. Administration of the course was taken over by the South Australian Jockey Club in 1975. The racecourse was also once served by now-demolished Cheltenham Racecourse railway station on the Outer Harbor railway line. In November 2007, the SAJC sold the racecourse land for A$85 million for a new housing development. It was proposed that the proceeds of the sale be used to help fund the Victoria Park Racecourse redevelopment. Behemoth (foaled 2015) is a multiple Group 1 winning Australian bred thoroughbred racehorse. Background Behemoth was initially sold at the 2016 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale for A$120,000. At the 2017 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, Behemoth was purchased by his current owners, Grand Syndicates for just $6,000. Racing career 2017/18: two-year-old season Behemoth made his race debut at Balaklava on the 20 June 2018, where he finished in fifth position. Redelva
Redelva was a notable Australian thoroughbred racehorse. A chestnut son of Romantic Hope from the mare Delvena, he was foaled in 1983 and was trained throughout his career by Greg Varcoe. Redelva competed primarily in sprint races winning up to a distance of 1400m. He was a durable horse winning quality races at the highest level as a two-year-old right through to the age of eight.
