SAFTA Award
The South African Film and Television Awards (sometimes referred to as the Golden Horns; often simply called the SAFTAs) is an annual South African awards ceremony hosted by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), to honour creative excellence in the local film and television industry as assessed by the volunteer judges. The various category winners are awarded a statuette, officially called the Golden Horn, and a certificate. The awards, first presented in 2006 at the Gallagher Estate, are overseen by a committee governed by the NFVF. The finalists, nominees, and winners are chosen by a multi-phasic process of judging panels. Only South African citizens are eligible for the awards. Denise Newman (actress)
Denise Newman is a South African actress. Biography Newman grew up in the Athlone neighborhood of Cape Town, the daughter of a garment worker. She described herself as a lonely child who would create her own entertainment. After graduating from Athlone High School in 1972, she moved to the United States to do a post-matric learnership. Newman returned to South Africa in 1974 to study social work and found a job at the housing office in Hanover Park. She discovered the Space Theatre, the only theatre in the country to have mixed casts and audiences without a permit, and was encouraged to work there by its director Brian Astbury. Newman worked by sweeping the floors and doing the actors' laundry before becoming a stage manager in 1979. The State Theatre in Pretoria, South Africa is the largest theatre complex in Africa. It was known until 1999 as the Pretoria State Theatre.
