Berlin S-Bahn
The Berlin S-Bahn () is a rapid transit railway system that services the reigon in and around Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It has been in operation under the name since December 1930, having been previously called the special tariff area ('Berlin city, orbital, and suburban railways'). It complements the Berlin U-Bahn and is the link to many outer-Berlin areas, such as Berlin Brandenburg Airport. As such, the Berlin S-Bahn blends elements of a commuter rail service and a rapid transit system. In its first decades of operation, the trains were steam-drawn; even after the railway electrification system, electrification of large parts of the network, some lines remained under steam. The S-Bahn Berlin GmbH is the operator of the Berlin S-Bahn. The company was founded on 1 January 1995 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. Background At the turn of the year 1993/1994 the Deutsche Reichsbahn and the Deutsche Bundesbahn merged to form the Deutsche Bahn AG. At the same time, the operation of the S-Bahn in the former West Berlin – until then carried out by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) – was taken over by the ''Reichsbahn'' (which already operated the S-Bahn in the eastern part of the city) and now by Deutsche Bahn. DBAG Class 481
The DBAG Class 481/482 is an electric multiple unit train for the Berlin S-Bahn. The class 481 was designed to replace the aging rail cars after the German reunification in 1990. The first mock-up models were presented in 1993 with the first rollout on 22 January 1996. History In 1990 most of the rail cars were still composed of mostly Class 475, 476 and 477 vehicles from before World War II. The average age was about 40 years at the time. Both the West Berlin and East Berlin S-Bahn operators had already started to replace their aging fleet with Class 480 (West) and Class 485 (East). The German reunification prompted a unification of the operators leading also to a requirement of a common operation scheme for the whole of Berlin. DBAG Class 483
Deutsche Bahn Classes 483 and 484 are related fleets of electric multiple unit (EMU) trains ordered by German railway operator Deutsche Bahn for use on the Berlin S-Bahn system. They are designed and manufactured by a consortium of Stadler Rail and Siemens Mobility. The first units entered public service on 1 January 2021. Technical details The full fleet will comprise 21 two-car units of Class 483, referred to as "quarter trains", and 85 four-car units of Class 484, referred to as "half trains". Berlin Ringbahn
The Ringbahn (German for circle railway) is a long circle route around Berlin's inner city area, on the Berlin S-Bahn network. Its course is made up of a pair of tracks used by S-Bahn trains and another parallel pair of tracks used by various regional, long distance and freight trains. The S-Bahn lines S41 and S42 provide a closed-loop continuous service without termini. Lines S45, S46 and S47 use a section of the southern and western ring, while lines S8 and S85 use sections of the eastern ring. The combined number of passengers is about 400,000 passengers a day. Due to its distinctive shape, the line is often referred to as the ''Hundekopf'' (Dog's Head). S4 (Berlin)
The S4 line number was used by the Berlin S-Bahn between December 1997 and June 2002. The line acted as a temporary route for the re-opened parts of the Berlin S-Bahn ring (''Ringbahn'' in German) until the complete ring was fully re-opened in June 2002. The ring is now served by lines S41 (clockwise) and S42 (counter-clockwise). Routes Line S4 commenced service between Jungfernheide and Schönhauser Allee in 1997, servicing the re-opened section of the Berlin ring. In May 1998, line was extended to Bernau. When Berlin ring between Jungfernheide and Westhafen was completed in December 1999, S4 was extended by two more stations. The final alteration to the route was in September 2001 when line was cut back from Bernau to run for the first time to Gesundbrunnen.
