Rūdninkai Forest
Rūdninkai Forest () is the fifth-largest Forests in Lithuania, forest in Lithuania. This old-growth forest in southeastern Lithuania is south of Vilnius. The forest is within the Vilnius District Municipality, Vilnius, Šalčininkai District Municipality, Šalčininkai and Varėna District Municipality, Varėna district municipalities. The forest stretches over , of which is covered with trees. The Pirčiupiai-Eišiškės road crosses the forest's western part, while the Pirčiupiai-Jašiūnai road goes through the northern part. In the forest's north is the town of Baltoji Vokė and roughly to the southeast is Šalčininkai. Geography The Rūdninkai forest consists of 23 smaller forests, of which the biggest are the following: Dargužiai, Jašiūnai, , , Pirčiupiai, , , and , Valkininkai, and more. Birch
A birch is a thin-leaved deciduous hardwood tree of the genus ''Betula'' (), in the family Betulaceae, which also includes alders, hazels, and hornbeams. It is closely related to the beech- oak family Fagaceae. The genus ''Betula'' contains 30 to 60 known taxa of which 11 are on the IUCN 2011 Red List of Threatened Species. A pine is any conifer tree or shrub in the genus ''Pinus'' () of the family (biology), family Pinaceae. ''Pinus'' is the sole genus in the subfamily Pinoideae. Rūdninkai Training Area
Rūdninkai Training Area () is a military facility in Lithuania, located southwest of Vilnius and from the border with Belarus. It is surrounded by Rūdninkai Forest, the fifth largest list of forests in Lithuania, forest in Lithuania. It is part of a larger training complex encompassing about . History Established in 1948, during the Occupation of the Baltic states, Soviet occupation, the area was used for training bomber crews. The facility was closed in 1993. Unexploded ordnance (UXO), usually air-dropped bombs weighing , are still discovered in the facility. The largest bomb, detonated in 2007, weighed . Thermokarst
Thermokarst is a type of terrain characterised by very irregular surfaces of marshy hollows and small hummocks formed as ice-rich permafrost thaws. The land surface type occurs in Arctic areas, and on a smaller scale in mountainous areas such as the Himalayas and the Swiss Alps. Inland Dunes
Inland dunes are eolian sand dunes that are found inland, away from coastal regions. Formation In Central Europe, towards the end of the last glacial period (about 12,000 years ago), it was about 10 degrees colder than today. There was therefore no forest cover but only patchy vegetation in the form of tundra. In addition, in the areas covered by the ice sheet, the vegetation had to re-establish itself as the glaciers melted. As a result, the winds could blow almost unhindered. Light, fine-grained soil particles, especially of silt and sand were plucked up by air currents, often transported for miles and then deposited at another location.
