Río Branco is a city in the Cerro Largo Department, Cerro Largo Departments of Uruguay, department of northeastern Uruguay, it borders the Brazilian city of Jaguarão, with which it communicates through the Baron of Mauá International Bridge. Name The words ''Rio Branco'' mean "white river" in Portuguese language, Portuguese. However, the name does not refer to any local river; it is a tribute to Brazilian diplomat José Paranhos, Baron of Rio Branco, who negotiated the definitive borders of Brazil and Uruguay. Hence the Portuguese name, instead of Spanish language, Spanish ''Río Blanco'' (although the city's name has an acute accent on the first word that is required in Spanish, but absent from the Portuguese spelling). Baron Of Mauá International Bridge
The Baron of Mauá International Bridge (, ) is a bridge that crosses the Jaguarão River, linking the cities of Jaguarão, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and Río Branco, Uruguay. Built between 1927 and 1930, it was named in honor of Irineu Evangelista de Souza, Baron and Viscount of Mauá, an important businessman and banker who developed activities in both countries during the 19th century. José Maria da Silva Paranhos Júnior, Baron of Rio Branco (in Portuguese language, Portuguese: ''Barão do Rio Branco'') (20 April 1845 – 10 February 1912) was a Brazilian Brazilian nobility, nobleman, diplomat, geographer, historian, politician and professor, considered to be the "Patron of Foreign relations of Brazil, Brazilian diplomacy". He was the son of statesman José Paranhos, Viscount of Rio Branco. The Baron of Rio Branco was a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, Brazilian Academy of Letters, occupying its 34th chair from 1898 until his death in 1912. Jaguarão River
The Jaguarão or Yaguarón River (, ) is a Brazilian and Uruguayan river. It forms the border between Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul state in southernmost Brazil. The river originates in Serras de Sudeste (Southeastern Mountain Ranges) and flows east to empty into Lagoa Mirim (Portuguese language, Portuguese) / Laguna Merín (Spanish language, Spanish), which is a large coastal lagoon, which is indirectly connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Melo () is the capital city of the Cerro Largo Department of north-eastern Uruguay. As of the census of 2023, it is the ninth most populated city of the country with a population of 56,013. Geography Location It is located at the center of the department, on the intersection of Route 7 with Route 8, south of Aceguá and the border with Brazil. Jaguarão () is a municipality in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul located on the shores of the Jaguarão River, bordering Uruguay.
