Rye Riptides
''Rye Riptides'' is a boat that was made by a 5th grade class in New Hampshire that was released to the Atlantic Ocean in 2020, and spent 462 days at sea before being discovered in Norway in 2022. The boat was built by two science classes at Rye Junior High School in New Hampshire and launched on October 25, 2020; it was found on February 1, 2022, on a small uninhabited island off the larger island of Smøla. Rye, New Hampshire
Rye is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,543 at the 2020 census. The town is home to several state parks along the Atlantic coastline. History The first settlement in New Hampshire, originally named Pannaway Plantation, was established in 1623 at Odiorne's Point by a group of fishermen led by David Thompson. The settlement was abandoned in favor of Strawbery Banke, which became Portsmouth. The first settler in present-day Rye was probably William Berry. Prior to its incorporation in 1726 as a parish of New Castle, Rye was called "Sandy Beach" and its lands were once parts of New Castle, Portsmouth, Greenland and Hampton. Smøla (island)
Smøla is the 19th largest island in Norway. The island is located in Smøla Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county; the vast majority of the municipality is the island. The island has a good road network across the island that connects it to many of the small surrounding islands, however, it does not have any outside road connections to the rest of Norway. The only regular ferry service is via the small island of Edøya to the south of Smøla which one can drive to from Smøla. The population of the island is mostly employed in the fishing industry or in industries that support the fishing industry. There is also a window factory on the island. There is some dairy and vegetable farming (especially carrots) on the island also. Friendly Floatees are plastic bath toys (including rubber ducks) marketed by The First Years and made famous by the work of Curtis Ebbesmeyer, an oceanographer who models ocean currents on the basis of flotsam movements. Ebbesmeyer studied the movements of a consignment of 28,800 Friendly Floatees—yellow ducks, red beavers, blue turtles, and green frogs—that were washed into the Pacific Ocean in 1992.
