Ryder Burton
Admiral (Royal Navy), Admiral James Ryder Burton, Royal Guelphic Order, KH (1795 – 2 August 1876) was a British Royal Navy officer. He was the son of Edmund Burton, the Dean of Killala. He progressed on the Reserved List to the rank of Admiral on 14 November 1863. In 1823, he married Anne Maria Plunkett, the widow of Philip Roche of Dublin and youngest daughter of Baron Dunsany, Randal Plunkett, 13th Baron of Dunsany (1739–1821). He was believed by some to be an heir to an Burton baronets, old baronetcy in the Baronetage of England that was possibly dormant, but he did not pursue inheriting it. Admiral (Royal Navy)
Admiral is a senior rank of the Royal Navy, which equates to the NATO rank code Ranks and insignia of NATO, OF-9, outranked only by the rank of Admiral of the Fleet (Royal Navy), admiral of the fleet. Royal Navy officers holding the ranks of Rear Admiral (Royal Navy), rear admiral, Vice Admiral (Royal Navy), vice admiral and admiral of the fleet are sometimes considered generically to be admirals. The Royal Guelphic Order (), sometimes referred to as the Hanoverian Guelphic Order, is a Kingdom of Hanover, Hanoverian order of chivalry instituted on 28 April 1815 by the Prince Regent (later King George IV). It takes its name from the House of Guelph, of which the House of Hanover was a branch. The Dean of Killala is based at the Cathedral Church of St Patrick, Killala in the Diocese of Killala within the united bishopric of Tuam, Killala and Achonry of the Church of Ireland. Baron Dunsany
The title Baron of Dunsany or, more commonly, Lord Dunsany, is one of the oldest (1439 or 1461/2) dignities in the Peerage of Ireland, one of just a handful of 13th- to 15th-century titles still extant, having had 21 holders, of the Plunkett name, to date. Other surviving medieval baronies include Kerry (1223, now a subsidiary title of the Marquess of Lansdowne), Kingsale (1344, feudal barony 1223), Baron Louth (second creation, 1541), and Dunboyne (1541, feudal barony 1324). Burton Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Burton, one in the Baronetage of England and one in the Baronetage of Ireland. Both creations are extinct. The Burton Baronetcy, of Stockerston in the County of Leicester, was created in the Baronetage of England on 22 July 1622 for Sir Thomas Burton, son of John Burton of Braunston who had purchased the Stockerston Hall estate in 1580. He was knighted in Dublin in 1605. He served as High Sheriff of Leicestershire in 1633. His son, the second Baronet, served the Royalist cause during the English Civil War and his estate was subsequently sequestered. Following the Restoration his son the third Baronet served as high sheriff in 1682. He sold Stockerston in 1690. The fourth and last Baronet was imprisoned for debt in 1710 and following conviction for theft in 1722 was transported. The baronetcy presumably became extinct on his death in circa 1750. Baronets are hereditary titles awarded by the Crown. The current baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier, existing baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland and Great Britain. To be recognised as a baronet, it is necessary to prove a claim of succession. When this has been done, the name is entered on the Official Roll of the Baronetage. Persons who have not proven their claims may not be officially styled as baronets. This was ordained by Royal warrant (document), Royal Warrant in February 1910.
