Ryde Wight Wizards
The Isle of Wight Warriors (formerly Isle of Wight Islanders) are a motorcycle speedway team from England. They last competed in the 2019 National Development League and ride their home meetings at the Smallbrook Stadium. Since leaving the British Speedway leagues, the team has competed in various challenge matches and the amateur NORA league. History Origins and 1990s Isle of Wight speedway began in 1996, at the Smallbrook Stadium, when the team signed up as a founder member of the newly formed Conference League. The league was for teams outside of the Premier League at the time and during their inaugural season the Ryde Wight Wizards finished in fourth place in the 1996 Speedway Conference League table. 2008 Premier League Speedway Season
The 2008 Premier League speedway season was the second division of motorcycle speedway racing in the United Kingdom and the 14th season since its creation in 1995. The league was governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). Summary The League consisted of 16 teams for the 2008 season with the addition of the 2007 Conference League champions the Scunthorpe Scorpions. New rules introduced for 2008 include three points for an away win compared to two points in 2007, and the removal of bonus points, in which a team was awarded an additional point for an aggregate win over a home and away match against another team. The team finishing at the top of the league table at the end of the season after accumulating the most points were declared the Premier League champions. Cory James Gathercole (born 2 December 1986) is an Australian former motorcycle speedway rider. Career Gathercole first came to British speedway when he joined the Swindon Robins squad in the Elite League for the 2007 Elite League speedway season and the Isle of Wight Islanders for the 2007 Premier League speedway season. He was part of the Isle of Wight four who won the Premier League Four-Team Championship, held on 8 July 2007, at the East of England Arena. Glen Alan Phillips (born 22 November 1982) in Farnborough, Kent, is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Phillips represented the Great Britain national speedway team at Under-21 level. His primary club while riding in the British speedway leagues was the Isle of Wight Islanders. He was part of the Isle of Wight four who won the Premier League Four-Team Championship, held on 8 July 2007, at the East of England Arena. In 2015, Phillips was part of the British team with Richard Hall, Andrew Appleton and James Shanes that won the world championship gold medal at the 2015 Team Long Track World Championship. Krzysztof Stojanowski (born 5 January 1979, in Sulechów, Poland) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Poland. Career Stojanowski rode in the Team Speedway Polish Championship for Zielona Góra, Krosno, Ostrów, Gdańsk, Opole, Łódź and Gniezno. Glasgow Tigers are a motorcycle speedway team from Glasgow, Scotland. Formed in 1928, the club adopted the Tigers nickname in 1946 and compete in the British SGB Championship. The team race at Ashfield Stadium and celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2021. Jason Bunyan
Jason Michael Bunyan (born 9 March 1979 in Milton Keynes) is a former England under-21 international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He is a ten times champion of New Zealand. Racing career He won the New Zealand Championship from 2004 to 2006, 2008 to 2010, 2012 to 2014 and 2016. The ten wins broke the previous record of nine wins held by Larry Ross. Bunyan began his British leagues career when signing for Poole Pirates for the 1995 Premier League speedway season. After a season with Oxford Cheetahs he moved to join the Isle of Wight Islanders from 1997 to 1998. Christopher Robert Holder (born 24 September 1987 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian speedway rider, who was the 2012 World Speedway Champion. He is also five times Australian champion (2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014. Career Holder won the Australian Under-21 Championship in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, in addition to finishing runner-up in the Under-21 World Championship in 2007 and 2008. 2007 Premier League Speedway Season
The 2007 Premier League speedway season was the second division of speedway in the United Kingdom and governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). Season summary The League consisted of 15 teams for the 2007 season with the addition of the Birmingham Brummies from the 2006 season. The top four teams at the time of the fixture cut-off date to compete for the championship in the play-offs. Birmingham Brummies were in fifth place at the time of the fixture cut-off date, therefore the Isle of Wight Islanders qualified for the play-offs. Derwent Park
Derwent Park is a Rugby League Stadium and former motorcycle speedway in Workington, England situated beside the Cumbrian River Derwent. It is used mostly for rugby league matches and is the home stadium of Workington Town who play in League 1 the 3rd tier of the British rugby league system. Derwent Park has a capacity of 12,000 people with 1,200 seats and the pitch is surrounded by a motorcycle speedway track. History The stadium was opened in 1956. The record attendance at Derwent Park was set on 13 March 1965 when 17,741 spectators turned up for a third round Challenge Cup match against Wigan. Speedway began in Workington after a successful application was made by the promotion team for a licence to race at Derwent Park for the 1970 season. Premier League Pairs Championship
The SGB Championship Pairs formerly the Premier League Pairs Championship (from 1997 to 2016) is a motorcycle speedway contest for the second tier teams in the United Kingdom to determine the Pairs champions. The teams consist of the top two riders from each club competing. The meetings comprise ten teams of two riders drawn into two qualifying groups. Rules In the ''Qualification Heats'', riders are allocated starting gates. For the ''Semi-Finals'', the group winners have first choice of gate positions (A&C or B&D). Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside. For the ''Final'', the gate positions (A&C and B&D) are decided by the toss of a coin. All heats are scored as follows:*1st = 4pts, 2nd = 3pts, 3rd = 2pts, 4th = 0pts. This system is used to encourage team riding.
