Ryde Sports F.C.
Ryde Sports (1888–1997) were an English football club based in Ryde, Isle of Wight. Before their untimely demise, Ryde Sports was for many years a successful and significant club on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire, and an important part of the town. History Ryde Sports F.C. was founded in 1888 and became one of the eight founder members of the Hampshire League in 1896. Although finishing at the foot of the table in the inaugural season, the club soon improved by twice finishing runners-up, they also spent the 1898–99 season in the Southern League where they finished as runner-up in the short lived Division 2 South & West Section. The 1899-1900 season was a highly successful one in which they won the Hampshire League and Hampshire Senior Cup double. After the Great War, Ryde joined the Isle of Wight League, twice being champions before returning the county fold in 1923 when they promptly won the East Division title at the first attempt. Smallbrook Stadium
Smallbrook Stadium is a multi-use sports venue on the east side of the Ashey Road, south of Ryde. It currently hosts two football teams and motorcycle speedway run by Island Speedway (Iow) Limited. Football The ground hosts Ryde Saints, who play in the Isle of Wight leagues. Newport (IOW) F.C. who play in the Wessex Football League played at the stadium from 2022 until 2023 and the defunct Ryde Sports F.C. also played at the stadium. Speedway The venue was the home of the Isle of Wight Warriors, who competed in the British speedway leagues from 2009 until 2019. In 2021, the club announced they would not be competing during the 2021 season but various speedway challenge matches still take place at the stadium. History The stadium is named after the existing Smallbrook Heath. In 1990, Ryde Sports F.C. moved into the newly built stadium and they were elected to the Wessex League that year. Wessex League
The Wessex Football League, known as the Velocity Wessex Football League for sponsorship reasons, is an English regional men's football league in southern England. Its members are primarily from Hampshire and Dorset, but clubs from adjoining counties such as Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey, and the Isle of Wight are also eligible. The Premier Division is one of the sixteen recognised leagues to form the ninth level of the English football league system (known as Step 5 of the National League System), and Division One is one of seventeen recognised leagues at level 10 (Step 6). Champions of the Wessex League who meet the relevant ground and financial requirements are eligible for promotion to the Southern League Division One South or Isthmian League Division One South Central.
