Castletown () is a small village and also a parish in County Laois in Ireland. History The older Irish name for the town was ''Baile Chaisleáin Ua bhFoirchealláin'' (meaning "castle-town of Uí Fhoirchealláin"). This has been anglicised as ''Ballycashlan-Offerillan'' and ''Ballycaslane-Offeralane''. Uí Fhoirchealláin is the name of the parish and was added to distinguish it from another Castletown. According to an extract from ''A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland'', published in 1837 by Samuel Lewis, Castletown was then "''a village in the Parish of Offerlane, barony of Upper Ossory, Queen’s county, and province of Leinster, 1 miles (S.by W.) from Mountrath; containing 367 inhabitants. Joe McDonagh Cup
The Joe McDonagh Cup () is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The cup forms the second-tier of Hurling for senior county teams (the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship is the first-tier trophy). It is contested by the six county teams ranked 12–17 in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Each year, the champions of the Joe McDonagh Cup are promoted to their Province (Gaelic games)#Provincial championships, provincial championship, and the lowest finishing team is relegated to the Christy Ring Cup. The 2019 Joe McDonagh Cup was the second staging of the Joe McDonagh Cup since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 2018 Joe McDonagh Cup, 2018. The fixtures were announced on 11 October 2018. The competition began on 11 May 2019 and ended on 30 June 2019. On 30 June 2019, Laois GAA, Laois won the Joe McDonagh Cup following a 3-26 to 1-21 defeat of Westmeath GAA, Westmeath in the final at Croke Park. This was their first ever Joe McDonagh Cup title. The Laois county hurling team represents Laois in hurling and is governed by Laois GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the Joe McDonagh Cup and the National Hurling League. Laois's home ground is O'Moore Park, Portlaoise. The team's manager is Willie Maher. The team last won the Leinster Senior Championship in 1949, the All-Ireland Senior Championship in 1915 and has never won the National League. The Laois Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Laois GAA clubs. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1888. Clough–Ballacolla are the title holders, defeating Rathdowney–Errill by 2-22 to 0-22 in the 2024 final. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the Bob O'Keefe Cup.
