Ruy Seabra
Ruy Seabra (born 13 May 1947) is a Portuguese lawyer and was briefly a football manager. He had no football experience when he was announced as the choice of then President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Silva Resende, for manager of the Portugal national football team, after the disappointing presence at the 1986 World Cup finals, mostly due to the Saltillo Affair. Seabra was officially the team selector, while Juca would be the coach for the UEFA Euro 1988 qualifying. The absence of all the members of the national team present at the recent World Cup, made the mission of qualifying almost impossible. The unlikely partnership lasted 6 matches, with one win, 4 draws and 1 loss. Portuguese Football Federation
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) ( pt, Federação Portuguesa de Futebol; ) is the governing body of football in Portugal. The federation was formed in 1914 as Portuguese Football Union (UPF) by the three existing regional associations of Lisbon, Portalegre and Porto, before adopting its current name in 1926, and is based in the city of Oeiras. 1986 World Cup
The 1986 FIFA World Cup was the 13th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams. It was played in Mexico from 31 May to 29 June 1986. The tournament was the second to feature a 24-team format. Colombia had been originally chosen to host the competition by FIFA but, largely due to economic reasons, was not able to do so, and resigned in 1982. Mexico was selected as the new host in May 1983, and became the first country to host the World Cup more than once, after previously hosting in 1970. The World Cup was won by Argentina (their second title, after winning in 1978). Argentina was captained by the 25-year-old Diego Maradona, who played a large part in his team's success by scoring his " Hand of God" goal, as well as another voted "Goal of the Century", in the same quarter-final against England. Saltillo Affair
The Saltillo Affair ( pt, O Caso Saltilho) was a series of controversies surrounding the Portuguese national football team during its participation in the Mexico '86 FIFA World Cup. The affair was named after the Mexican city of Saltillo, Coahuila, in which the team was headquartered for the competition, and also the place where the majority of the described events occurred. The team had qualified for only one previous World Cup tournament, in 1966, in which it finished third. Following a difficult qualification, the 1986 campaign did not start well with the suspicion of doping falling on one of the players who had been selected for the tournament. Although that test was later proven wrong, that was the first of many controversies to affect the team in the following weeks, including threats of strikes from the players, the announcement of a series of demands to the Portuguese Federation and reports of inappropriate behaviour at the team's headquarters. Júlio Cernadas Pereira (13 January 1929 – 11 October 2007), commonly known as Juca, was a Portuguese Association football, football midfielder and coach. Most of his career was associated with Sporting CP, as both player and manager. UEFA Euro 1988
The 1988 UEFA European Football Championship final tournament was held in West Germany from 10 to 25 June 1988. It was the eighth UEFA European Championship, which is held every four years and supported by UEFA. The tournament crowned the Netherlands as European champions for the first time.
