Charles Edwin Ruttan
Charles Edwin Ruttan, known professionally as Charles E. Ruttan, (1884–1939) was a Canadian-born painter. He served in the United States Naval Reserve Force as a pilot lieutenant during World War I. Because of his background with painting aerial combat scenes, Ruttan was put in charge of pictorial records of trans-Atlantic flights for the United States Navy. One of his most well-known works is the World War I poster titled "A Wonderful Opportunity for You". Personal life Ruttan was born on 21 August 1884, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to Thomas David Ruttan (1851-1918) and Martha A. Duetta (1853-1924). He had three siblings: William, Alfred Arthur and a sister. On 1 June 1905, Ruttan married Della Elvira Brown. They had two children. Ruttan died on 6 November 1939, in Hollywood. Deric Ruttan
Deric J. Ruttan (born January 27, 1972) is a Canadian country music singer, songwriter and record producer from Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada. A Nashville, Tennessee resident, he has released four studio albums and has written or co-written more than 60 songs that have been recorded by other recording artists. Breakthrough Deric moved to Nashville in 1994 to pursue his music career, spending his days writing songs and his nights scouring the city getting ideas and learning from local singer-songwriters. He got his break in 1999 when producer Steve Bogard heard one of Deric's tapes and liked it. Steve signed Deric to a songwriting deal and immediately began recording his first demos. After Doug Howard at Lyric Street Records heard his demo and Deric played five songs live for Randy Goodman, Deric entered a record deal with the label. Henry Norlande Ruttan
Brigadier General Henry Norlande Ruttan (May 21, 1848 – October 13, 1925) was a Canadian engineer and Canadian Army Officer. In 1885, he became the first city engineer of Winnipeg, remaining in office until his retirement in 1914. Career Ruttan served as a survey engineer to Sir Sandford Fleming. He was Winnipeg's city engineer for many years. Of Ruttan's many engineering projects, the James Avenue Pumping Station (1906), was considered the most modern such institution in the world. A charter member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, he served as president in 1910. In addition to the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering, he belonged to several other professional organizations, including Institution of Civil Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, and Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce. Henry Ruttan
Henry Ruttan (June 12, 1792 – July 31, 1871) was a businessman, inventor and politician figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Adolphustown in 1792 to William Ruttan and Margaret Steele. The Ruttans were United Empire Loyalists from New York and descendants of French Huguenots whom fled to America via England and Holland. At the age of 14, he left school to work in a store in Kingston. He served in the militia ( 1st Battalion of Northumberland Militia) during the War of 1812. After the war, he remained in the militia and reached the rank of colonel with the 3rd Battalion of Northumberland. He left the militia in 1846 but was called back into service from 1860 to 1862 with the 4th Military District. He set up a business in Cobourg in 1815. Jack Ruttan
John Douglas Ruttan (April 5, 1889 – January 7, 1973) was a Canadian amateur ice hockey player and coach. Ruttan played for the Winnipeg Hockey Club and was a member of the 1913 Allan Cup championship team. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1963. Playing career Ruttan played juvenile hockey with the Winnipeg Armstrong's Point hockey team that won the Winnipeg juvenile championship of 1906. He switched to the Rustler club the following season which won the 1907 juvenile championship. The following season, Ruttan entered St. John's College (known today as the University of Manitoba and its team won the Manitoba University Hockey League championship. Ruttan moved up to senior hockey in 1909 and played for the Manitoba Varsity hockey team which won the championship of the Winnipeg Senior Hockey League in 1911. James Farrand Ruttan
James Farrand Ruttan (March 10, 1850 – January 21, 1904) was a real estate agent and politician in Ontario. He was mayor of Port Arthur from 1891 to 1892. He was born in Cobourg, the son of Henry Jones Ruttan, who was the son of Henry Ruttan, and Margaret Pringle. Ruttan began work with the Post Office in Ottawa, later becoming involved in railway construction. In 1882, he opened a real estate office in Port Arthur, settling there the following year. Ruttan became real estate agent for the McVicar family, a large land-holder in the area. This brought him into conflict with the Canadian Pacific Railway, who required land to build a railway station. Rutton served on the town council in 1884, 1888 and 1889. From 1889 to 1903, he was Crown Lands agent for the Thunder Bay District. Ruttan died of pneumonia in Port Arthur at the age of 53. Robert Fulford Ruttan, (July 15, 1856 – February 19, 1930) was a Canadian chemist and university professor. Biography Born in Newburgh, Canada West, the son of Dr. Allan Ruttan, a physician, and Caroline Smith, Ruttan's family moved to Napanee around 1863. He received a Bachelor of Arts in natural science degree in 1881 from the University of Toronto. He received his M.D. in 1884 from McGill University, where he also participated in the establishment of the zeta psi fraternity. He never practiced medicine, but rather did postgraduate studies in organic chemistry with August Wilhelm von Hofmann at the University of Berlin. Returning to Canada in 1886, he was appointed a lecturer in chemistry in the faculty of medicine at McGill. In 1891, he became professor. Vernon Wesley Ruttan (1924–2008) was a development economist at the University of Minnesota, where he was Regents Professor Emeritus in the Departments of Economics and Applied Economics. Ruttan's research focused on agricultural development, induced innovation, technical change and productivity growth, institutions, and development assistance policy.
