Ruth Gates
Ruth Deborah Gates (March 28, 1962 – October 25, 2018) was the Director of the Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology and the first woman to be President of the International Society for Reef Studies. Her research was dedicated to understanding coral reef ecosystems, specifically coral-algal symbiosis and the capacity for corals to acclimatize under future climate change conditions. Doctor Gates is most accredited with looking at coral biology and human-assisted coral evolution, known as ''super corals'', as notably seen in the documentary ''Chasing Coral'', available on Netflix. Education Gates was inspired by the documentary ''The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau''. She studied biology at Newcastle University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1984. Madeleine van Oppen is a Dutch ecological geneticist researching at the University of Melbourne. She has been an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow since 2018. She obtained her MsC in 1990 and completed her PhD cum laude on the molecular biogeography of seaweeds at the University of Groningen in 1995. Oxybenzone or benzophenone-3 or BP-3 (trade names Milestab 9, Eusolex 4360, Escalol 567, KAHSCREEN BZ-3) is an organic compound. It is a pale-yellow solid that is readily soluble in most organic solvents. Oxybenzone belongs to the class of aromatic ketones known as benzophenones. It is widely used in plastics, toys, furniture finishes, and other products to limit UV degradation. Octyl methoxycinnamate or ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate ( INCI) or octinoxate (USAN), trade names Eusolex 2292 and Uvinul MC80, is an organic compound that is an ingredient in some sunscreens and lip balms. It is an ester formed from methoxycinnamic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. It is a liquid that is insoluble in water. It is primarily used in sunscreens and other cosmetics to absorb UV-B rays from the sun, protecting the skin from damage. It is also used to reduce the appearance of scars. Coral bleaching is the process when corals become white due to various stressors, such as changes in temperature, light, or nutrients. Bleaching occurs when coral polyps expel the zooxanthellae (dinoflagellates that are commonly referred to as algae) that live inside their tissue, causing the coral to turn white. The zooxanthellae are photosynthetic, and as the water temperature rises, they begin to produce reactive oxygen species. This is toxic to the coral, so the coral expels the zooxanthellae. Since the zooxanthellae produce the majority of coral colouration, the coral tissue becomes transparent, revealing the coral skeleton made of calcium carbonate. Kāneohe Bay, at , is the largest sheltered body of water in the main Hawaiian Islands.
