Russell Brown "Rusty" Wood (12 December 1929 – 1 July 2015) was an English cricketer. Wood was a right-handed Batsman (cricket), batsman who fielded as a wicket-keeper. He was born in Bristol. Wood made his first-class cricket, first-class debut for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Gloucestershire against Cambridge University Cricket Club, Cambridge University in 1950. He made 7 further first-class appearances, the last of which came against Glamorgan County Cricket Club, Glamorgan in the 1951 County Championship. In his 8 first-class matches, he scored 110 runs at an batting average (cricket), average of 12.22, with a high score of 48. This score came on debut against Cambridge University in 1950. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field, at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails (small sticks) balanced on three stumps. In cricket, a player's batting average is the total number of runs they have scored divided by the number of times they have been out, usually given to two decimal places. Since the number of runs a player scores and how often they get out are primarily measures of their own playing ability, and largely independent of their teammates, batting average is a good metric for an individual player's skill as a batter (although the practice of drawing comparisons between players on this basis is not without criticism). Cambridge University Cricket Club
Cambridge University Cricket Club, established in 1820, is the representative cricket club for students of the University of Cambridge. The club was recognised as holding first-class cricket, first-class status until 2020. The university played List A cricket in 1972 and 1974 only. It has not played top-level Twenty20 cricket. With some 1,200 members, home matches are played at Fenner's.
