Russell High School is a secondary school in Russell located under the jurisdiction of Upper Canada District School Board. In addition to Russell, students from Embrun, Casselman and Limoges attend Russell High School. The school has the highest graduation rate in Upper Canada District School Board and one of the highest in Ontario, with 94% of Grade 12 students achieving a high school diploma in 2008. History The school opened in 2004 because of the rapidly growing population of the Russell area as well as the growing proportion of anglophones in the area (most of the area historically being largely French-speaking). Beginning in 2004, the school added one grade each year. This process was finished in 2007 with the addition of Grade Twelve. The school's first principal was provincial curling champion Bryan Cochrane, who remained principal until June 2009 when he retired. Russell High School is a public high school for girls, located in the city of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. History On 23 January 1879, Robert Russell the Superintendent inspector for education in the Natal colony, placed an advertisement in the newspaper for a new school called the Model primary school for girls, it would later be changed into a high school. The school opened on 6 March 1879 in a single storey building on the corner of Berg and Chapel streets (later renamed Peter Kerchoff and Hoosen Haffejee), making it the oldest girls' only public school in Kwazulu-Natal. The school had 3 teachers and 169 pupils with Mrs. Eleanor Broome appointed as the school's first principal. The current school building was built in 1897.In 1941, the school was renamed Russell high school, to honour the founder of the school, Robert Russell. Russell High School was a high school in East Point, Georgia, United States that opened in 1924. Industrialist and philanthropist John J. Eagan donated the land for the school, provided the school was named after his uncle, the late William A. Russell a Confederate general. After Eagan's father died, Russell gave financial and spiritual support to three-month-old John Eagan and his mother (Russell's sister). School history The school closed in 1988 when it was combined with Headland High School (East Point), College Park High School (College Park) and Hapeville High School (Hapeville) to form Tri-Cities High School. At the time of its closing, Russell was the oldest school in the Fulton County system.
