Pembina Curling Club

The club was established in 1947 by a group of Fort Garry residents in Winnipeg and led by Art Elders. The cinder block building was finished in 1952 despite curling taking place over the last five years. John Helston
John B. Helston (born October 30, 1939) is a Canadian curler and curling coach. He won the playing second on the Mike Riley rink. He also won the 1991 Canadian Senior Curling Championships and the 2004 Canadian Masters Curling Championships, and was runner up at the 1998 Canadian Senior Curling Championships. He coached team Jennifer Jones at her first Hearts appearance in 2002. At the time of the 1984 Brier, he was employed as a communications consultant for MTS. Ernest Brian Toews (December 16, 1941 – January 27, 2019) was a Canadian curler. He won the playing third on the Mike Riley rink, and won a silver medal at the 1998 Canadian Senior Curling Championships. After playing in the 1986 Labatt Brier, he retired from competitive curling due to a bad knee. Personal life Toews was born in Altona, Manitoba and grew up on a family farm. He played baseball in his youth, playing for the Plum Coulee Pirates in the Southeastern Manitoba League. Michael Riley (curler)
Michael C. "Mike" Riley (born April 16, 1955) is a Canadian curler originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He skipped his home province to a Brier championship in 1984. Career Riley has been to three Briers. In 1975, he played third for Rod Hunter and at the Brier that year, they finished with a 6-5 record, tied for fifth place. Riley returned to the Brier in 1984, skipping a team of Brian Toews, John Helston and Russ Wookey. The team finished the round robin with an 8-3 record, in 1st place, which gave them a bye to the final against Ontario's Ed Werenich. The Manitoba four-some defeated "the Wrench" by a score of 7-4. The team would then go on to represent Canada at the 1984 Air Canada Silver Broom, the World Curling Championships. They would finish the round robin with a 6-3 record, but lost in the semi-final against Switzerland's Peter Attinger, Jr. This result placed them in 4th position.
