Ruscote
The Ruscote, Hardwick and Hanwell Fields estates are three interconnecting Banbury estates that were built between the 1930s and 2000s in Oxfordshire, England. History During excavations for the building of an office in Hennef Way in 2002, the remains of a British Iron Age settlement with circular buildings dating back to 200 BC were found. The site contained around 150 pieces of pottery and stone. Later there was a Roman villa at nearby Wykham Park. A small drinking-water reservoir lies to the north of Hennef way. The major road was named after Hennef in Germany. Ruscote was a local village, that dated back to the 15th century, but did not develop until the late 19th century. It was formally incorporated into the borough of Banbury in 1889. The 1919 Housing Act was followed by the building of the Easington housing estate of 361 council houses in what was one of the first slum clearance schemes in the country. Banbury is an historic market town and civil parish on the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire, South East England. The parish had a population of 54,335 at the 2021 Census. Banbury is a significant commercial and retail centre for the surrounding area of north Oxfordshire and southern parts of Warwickshire and Northamptonshire which are predominantly rural. Banbury's main industries are motorsport, car components, electrical goods, plastics, food processing and printing. London Overspill
London overspill communities are the communities created as a result of the government policy of moving residents out of Greater London into other areas in the South East of England between the 1930s and the 1970s. The policy was extended to relocate residents to several towns in the East Midlands, mostly Northamptonshire, situated near the M1 motorway and A1 trunk road. The policy even extended to the North West of England, with the town of Burnley in Lancashire, more than 200 miles from London, even being designated as a London overspill town. These largely consisted of council houses and new towns. Policy development The policy was initiated in the 1930s, and started in earnest after the Second World War, as a reaction to the housing shortages caused by enemy bombing and large amounts of substandard housing in the capital. Oxfordshire Ironstone Railway
The Oxfordshire Ironstone Railway was a standard-gauge industrial railway that served an ironstone quarry near the village of Wroxton in Oxfordshire. History The OIR linked the quarry with the Great Western Railway about to the east at a junction just north of Banbury. The line was opened between 1917 and 1919 and closed in 1967; the track was removed between 1967 and 1968. The quarry was heavily worked in the Second World War. The line also served the Banbury Alcan works at one point. The popular footpath from Drayton to Drayton Lodge crossed the railway at Drayton Crossing. Wroxton Central Ironstone Quarry was opened by 1919, closed and filled in 1967. Langley Ironstone Quarry was built near Balscot by 1926, and was closed and filled during 1943 when it ran out of ironstone. The Jacobs Douwe Egberts factory (JDE factory) is a former coffee producing factory in the Ruscote ward of Banbury, Oxfordshire, England. Built in the 1960s as a General Foods factory (GF factory) producing convenience food and drink including Bird's Custard, it subsequently changed ownership to Kraft Foods and Mondelez. History The factory was built by General Foods (GF) in 1964–66 across 42 acres at a cost of £6 million, and employed 1,300 people. It was partly due to the London overspill. In 1966, GF moved production of Bird's Custard from the former Alfred Bird & Sons factory site in Gibb Street, Birmingham (now the Custard Factory) to the new factory. 72% of the male employees at the Birmingham site relocated with the factory move.
