The Rural City of Warragul was a local government area about east-southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The rural city covered an area of , and existed from 1881 until 1994. History Originally part of the Shire of Buln Buln, Warragul was first incorporated as a shire on 9 December 1881. It annexed part of the Western Riding of the Shire of Narracan on 30 May 1906. On 17 August 1990, Warragul was proclaimed a rural city, one of the first in Victoria under the provisions of the ''Local Government Act 1989''. West Gippsland
West Gippsland, a region of Gippsland in Victoria, Australia, extends from the southeastern limits of metropolitan Melbourne and Western Port Bay in the west to the Latrobe Valley in the east, and is bounded by the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and the Mount Baw Baw Plateau in the Great Dividing Range to the north. Geography The western part of the region around Western Port Bay and the Bunyip River is mostly flat (much of it having been reclaimed from the drained Koo Wee Rup Swamp), while the eastern part consists of low rolling hills. To the north these hills become steeper as they merge into the Great Dividing Range. Darnum, Victoria
Darnum is a town in West Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, located 110 km east of Melbourne and a short distance to Warragul, in the Shire of Baw Baw. It is nestled between the Great Dividing Range and Strzelecki Ranges. The Moe River meanders through the edge of the township which the historic Darnum Butter Factory overlooks. The town's name comes from a word for "parrot", specifically, Rosella in the local indigenous Boonwurrung language. The post office opened on 1 December 1882 after the arrival of the railway. Darnum was originally a timber producing town and boasts a large stump in memory of the original timber mill's owner Clarrie Weir. Today the principal industry is dairy farming, with Fonterra, previously Bonlac Foods, operating a milk processing plant just north of town. Buln Buln, Victoria
Buln Buln is a town in West Gippsland, approximately 8 kilometres north of Warragul. At the 2021 Census, Buln Buln had a population of 551. Etymology ''buln buln'' is the Woiwurrung–Taungurung word for the superb lyrebird. History The post office opened as Brandy Creek on 1 April 1873 and became Buln Buln in 1874 (closing in 1973). A Telegraph Office was opened in March 1877. The Buln Buln Railway Station was operational from 1890 to 1958, as part of the Noojee railway line. Today The town has an Australian rules football team competing in the Ellinbank & District Football League, the Buln Buln Lyrebirds, dating back at least to World War I. The Shire of Baw Baw is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, in the eastern part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 52,015. It includes the towns of Drouin, Longwarry, Neerim South, Trafalgar, Warragul and Yarragon. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Buln Buln, Shire of Narracan, Rural City of Warragul, and some parts of the Shire of Upper Yarra. The shire is governed and administered by the Baw Baw Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Drouin, and it has a service centre located in Warragul.
