Buln Buln is a town in West Gippsland, approximately 8 kilometres north of Warragul. At the 2021 Census, Buln Buln had a population of 551. Etymology ''buln buln'' is the Woiwurrung–Taungurung word for the superb lyrebird. History The post office opened as Brandy Creek on 1 April 1873 and became Buln Buln in 1874 (closing in 1973). A Telegraph Office was opened in March 1877. The Buln Buln Railway Station was operational from 1890 to 1958, as part of the Noojee railway line. Today The town has an Australian rules football team competing in the Ellinbank & District Football League, the Buln Buln Lyrebirds, dating back at least to World War I. Along with the Football Club they also have a Netball Club who are also in the Ellinbank & District Netball Association, as well as a Cricket Club and Tennis Club. West Gippsland
West Gippsland, a region of Gippsland in Victoria, Australia, extends from the southeastern limits of metropolitan Melbourne and Western Port Bay in the west to the Latrobe Valley in the east, and is bounded by the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and the Mount Baw Baw Plateau in the Great Dividing Range to the north. Woiwurrung–Taungurung Language
Woiwurrung (sometimes spelt Woiwurrong, Woiworung, Wuywurung) and Taungurung (Taungurong, Daungwurrung Dhagung-wurrung, Thagungwurrung) are Aboriginal languages of the Kulin Nation of Central Victoria. Woiwurrung was spoken by the Woiwurrung and related peoples in the Yarra River (Birrarung) basin, and Taungurung by the Taungurung people north of the Great Dividing Range in the Goulburn River Valley around Mansfield, Benalla and Heathcote. Superb Lyrebird
The superb lyrebird (''Menura novaehollandiae'') is an Australian songbird, one of two species from the family Menuridae. It is one of the world's largest songbirds, and is renowned for its elaborate tail and courtship displays, and its excellent mimicry. Noojee Railway Line
The Noojee railway line is a closed railway line in State of Victoria, Victoria, Australia. Branching off from the Orbost railway line, Gippsland line at Warragul railway station, Warragul station, it was built to service the timber industry in the upper Latrobe River area, transporting timber as well as providing a general goods and passenger service to townships in the area. The final section of the line between Neerim South, Victoria, Neerim South and Noojee, Victoria, Noojee traversed increasingly hilly terrain and featured a number of large timber trestle bridges. Extensively and repeatedly damaged by bushfires over the years, the line was closed in the 1950s and dismantled.
