Runnymede Residents Association
Runnymede Independent Residents' Group was founded in 2001; it has held exactly one seventh of councillors' seats and formed the largest opposition party since the election it first contested in 2002. Electoral performance The Group was founded in 2001. Its maximal representation has been six of about forty-two seats ( the local elections occur in the bulk of years and the present number of councillors is 42) from 2002 to the time of writing, 2018. The group distribute campaign literature widely and have stood in a large minority of wards to Runnymede Borough Council. No election was held in the year when the party was set up (elections occur in three out of four years). In 2015 and 2016 the sole opposition – body of councillors opposing the politically governing group – were the six candidates the Group who had won various prior elections; one opposition councillor of a different denomination, UKIP, having been ousted in the 2015 election. Runnymede is a water-meadow alongside the River Thames in the English county of Surrey, and just over west of central London. It is notable for its association with the sealing of Magna Carta, and as a consequence is, with its adjoining hillside, the site of memorials. Runnymede Borough is named after the area, Runnymede being at its northernmost point. Topography The name Runnymede refers to land in public and National Trust ownership in the Thames flood plain south-west of the river between Old Windsor and Egham. The area includes (to the west of A308 road) the Long Mede and Runnymede, which together with Coopers Hill Slopes is managed by the National Trust. There is also a narrower strip of land, east of the road and west of the river, known as the Yard Mede. The ''Surrey Advertiser'' is a newspaper for Surrey, England which was established in 1864 and gradually evolved into the Surrey Advertiser Group of seven more localised titles. Guardian Media Group sold the Group to Trinity Mirror in 2010. The owners are now known as Reach plc. The head office is in Stoke Mill, Guildford. The Borough of Runnymede is a local government district with borough status in the English county of Surrey. It is a very prosperous part of the London commuter belt, with some of the most expensive housing in the United Kingdom outside central London, such as the Wentworth Estate. Runnymede is entirely unparished and is largely built-up. The borough's council is based in Addlestone; other settlements include Chertsey, Egham, Egham Hythe, Virginia Water, Englefield Green and Thorpe. At the 2011 Census, the population of the borough was 80,510.
