Runaway (1964 Film)
''Runaway'', also called ''Runaway Killer'', is a 1964 New Zealand made thriller film and a road movie. John O’Shea of Pacific Films produced, directed and co-wrote it. Shot in black and white and released on 35 mm and also 16 mm, it was cut to 80 minutes and renamed ''Runaway Killer'' for release in Britain, although this lost continuity between scenes. The film stars Colin Broadley in the lead, and several New Zealanders who became famous in other fields; Kiri Te Kanawa, Barry Crump and Ray Columbus. Plot High-flying but high-living accountant David Manning gets heavily into debt, loses his job and goes on the road. He is given a lift by the wealthy Laura, who fancies him and is jealous of Isobel, a young Maori woman they meet. After a fight he steals Laura's car and heads for the mountains of his childhood, meeting Diana on the inter-island ferry and pursued by police. They head up the glacier for a mountain pass. John O'Shea (director)
John Dempsey O'Shea (20 June 1920 – 8 July 2001) was a New Zealand independent filmmaker; he was a director, producer, writer and actor. He produced the only three feature films that were made in New Zealand between 1940 and 1970. Early life New Plymouth is where O'Shea was born in 1920. His parents were both of Irish Catholic ancestry, his mother, Norah Frances Dempsey, was born in New Zealand and his father, John Joseph O’Shea, was from County Limerick, Ireland. He had three older siblings. He grew up in New Plymouth and Whanganui and then went to study in Wellington at Victoria University College where he got involved with a film society. He also studied at Christchurch Teachers' Training College, and in 1942 served in the New Zealand Army for two years during World War II with the ambulance corps in the Pacific and Italy.
