Emma Jane McKenna (born August 18, 1983) is a multi-disciplinary writer. She is currently a PhD Candidate in English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University. Emma's first book of poetry, ''Chenille or Silk'', was published on March 8, 2019, with Caitlin Press. Her first full-length album as a singer-songwriter, '' Run With It'', was released on June 8, 2010. She was also a founding member of riot grrrl band Galaxy, with Katie Stelmanis and Maya Postepski. Duncan, British Columbia
Duncan (pop. 5,047 in 2021) is a city on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is the smallest city by area (2.07 square kilometres, 0.8 square miles) in Canada. It was incorporated in 1912. Location The city is about 45 kilometres from both Victoria to the south and Nanaimo to the north. Although the City of Duncan has a population of just over 5,000, it serves the Cowichan Valley which has a population of approximately 84,000, many of whom live in North Cowichan and Cowichan Tribes. This gives Duncan a much larger perceived "greater" population than that contained within the city limits. McMaster University (McMaster or Mac) is a public research university in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The main McMaster campus is on of land near the residential neighbourhoods of Ainslie Wood and Westdale, adjacent to the Royal Botanical Gardens. Riot grrrl is an underground feminist punk movement that began during the early 1990s within the United States in Olympia, Washington and the greater Pacific Northwest and has expanded to at least 26 other countries. Riot grrrl is a subcultural movement that combines feminism, punk music, and politics. It is often associated with third-wave feminism, which is sometimes seen as having grown out of the riot grrrl movement and has recently been seen in fourth-wave feminist punk music that rose in the 2010s. The genre has also been described as coming out of indie rock, with the punk scene serving as an inspiration for a movement in which women could express anger, rage, and frustration, emotions considered socially acceptable for male songwriters but less common for women. Katie Stelmanis
Kaitlin "Katie" Austra Stelmanis ( lv, Keitlīna "Keitija" Austra Štēlmane, born 1985) is a Toronto-based Latvian Canadian musician, who has performed and recorded both as a solo artist and with the bands Galaxy and Austra. Stelmanis identifies herself as a lesbian. Career Solo career She is classically trained and began performing in the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus at age 10. She was subsequently a member of the band Galaxy, along with Maya Postepski and Emma McKenna. Her debut album, ''Join Us'', was released by Blocks Recording Club, a Toronto-based artistic collective that has supported numerous artists through the years including Owen Pallett, Fucked Up and Bob Wiseman. Maya Alina Postepski is a Canadian musician and producer from Toronto. She has been making music for over ten years, best known as drummer of the electronic group, Austra. She is a prolific remix artist, DJ and she co-wrote and produced the 2012 album TRST with Robert Alfons as TR/ST (Arts & Crafts). She also performs solo under the title Princess Century. She released her second full-length LP, ''Progress'', on Paper Bag Records on October 16, 2015. In 2015 she moved to Belgium and Produced the album Forever by Soldout. She stopped working with Austra in May 2017 to focus on her solo project Princess Century and continues to Produce, DJ, make remixes and play drums for other bands including TR/ST.
