Rumba (sculpture)
''Rumba'' is a sculpture by sculptor Martti Aiha, located on the Porkkalankatu street in the district of Salmisaari in Helsinki, Finland. Aiha thinks the sculpture is one of his best. ''Rumba'' is made of black-painted aluminium and is 15 metres tall. The sculpture belongs to the collection of the Helsinki Art Museum.Rumba Helsinki Art Museum. Accessed on 20 September 2020. Martti Aiha
Martti Aiha (23 December 1952 – 5 May 2023) was a Finnish sculptor. He was born in Pudasjärvi and worked in Fiskars. Aiha made abstracted sculptured wall reliefs and free-standing sculptures. His reliefs made of transparent acrylic sheet give an impression of immateriality, incorporeality and weightlessness. The ornamental, flame-like living shapes have become his trademark. In addition to acrylic and plywood, he works with metal, wood or plastic. Many of Aiha's works are related to his curiosity of our use of public space. Salmisaari
Salmisaari () is a small area (a sector, ''pienalue'') belonging to the Ruoholahti quarter of the Länsisatama neighbourhood of Helsinki, Finland. The Salmisaari island was previously located west of the Helsinginniemi peninsula. However, during the early times of Länsisatama, it was annexed to the mainland by filling the sea in between. The area of Salmisaari has been named after this island. Since 1953, Salmisaari has included the Salmisaari power plant, owned by Helsingin Energia. It also has offices of Altia (Salmisaarenranta 7). The opposite half of the same building acts as the Helsinki Court House. Aluminium (or aluminum in North American English) is a chemical element; it has chemical symbol, symbol Al and atomic number 13. Alko
Alko Inc is the national alcoholic beverage retailing monopoly in Finland. It is the only store in the country which retails beer over 8% ABV, wine (except in vineyards) and spirits. Alcoholic beverages are also sold in licensed restaurants and bars but only for consumption on the premises. Alko is required by law to sell drinks with lower alcohol content than 8% and non-alcoholic alternatives, but in practice carries a very limited stock of low alcohol beer, cider and non-alcoholic drinks and others as supermarkets are allowed to sell those at a substantially lower price. Rumba
The term rumba may refer to a variety of unrelated music styles. Originally, "rumba" was used as a synonym for "party" in northern Cuba, and by the late 19th century it was used to denote the complex of secular music styles known as Cuban rumba. Since the early 20th century the term has been used in different countries to refer to distinct styles of music and dance, most of which are only tangentially related to the original Cuban rumba, if at all. The vague etymological origin of the term rumba, as well as its interchangeable use with guaracha in settings such as bufo theatre, is largely responsible for such worldwide polysemy of the term.
