Ruhrchemie
Ruhrchemie is a chemical company founded in 1927/28. The company, based in the Holten district of Oberhausen, is now the German headquarters of the OQ (company). It is now formally known as OQ Werk Ruhrchemie. History For a short time at the beginning of the 20th century, one of the first German airports seemed to be built in the Holtener Bruch, which had been largely drained by the canalization of the Emscher river. However, it remained with air shows and training flights; the course and outcome of the First World War prevented the airport project from being realized. Instead, the area was used for industrial purposes at the end of the 1920s. The company was founded in 1927 by numerous Ruhr mining companies as :de:Kohlechemie AG. It was renamed Ruhrchemie AG in April 1928 and began producing fertilizers at the Holten site in 1929. Otto Roelen
Otto Roelen (22 March 1897 – 30 January 1993) was a German chemist who pioneered using carbon monoxide to synthesize of organic compounds. Roelen was born in Mülheim, Germany and studied chemistry and graduated in 1922 from Technische Hochschule Stuttgart. He worked with Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Coal Research from 1922. He developed the homogeneously catalysed hydroformylation process (also known as " oxo synthesis") for the industrial synthesis of aldehydes from alkenes and carbon monoxide. During the second world war he was chief chemist for Ruhrchemie. After the war he described the construction, operation and yields of oxo synthesis plants in detail to British Department of Scientific and Industrial Research interrogators. Oberhausen (, ) is a city on the river Emscher in the Ruhr Area, Germany, located between Duisburg and Essen ( ). The city hosts the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and its Gasometer Oberhausen is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. History Oberhausen was named for its 1847 railway station which had taken its name from the List of castles in North Rhine-Westphalia, Oberhausen Castle. The new borough was formed in 1862 following inflow of people for the local coal mines and steel mills. RAG AG, formerly Ruhrkohle AG, is the largest German coal mining corporation. The company headquarters are in Essen in the Ruhr area. The company was founded on 27 November 1968, consolidating several coal mining corporations into the Ruhrkohle AG. On 12 September 2007 as a result of restructuring, the business areas of chemicals, energy and real estate were transferred to the new business entity Evonik Industries AG. In industrial chemistry, coal gasification is the process of producing syngas—a mixture consisting primarily of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (), carbon dioxide (), methane (), and water vapour ()—from coal and water, air and/or oxygen. Historically, coal was gasified to produce coal gas, also known as "town gas". Coal gas is combustible and was used for heating and municipal lighting, before the advent of large-scale extraction of natural gas from oil wells. In current practice, large-scale coal gasification installations are primarily for electricity generation (both in conventional thermal power stations and molten carbonate fuel cell power stations), or for production of chemical feedstocks. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a thermoplastic made from the monomer ethylene. It was the first grade of polyethylene, produced in 1933 by John C. Swallow and M.W Perrin who were working for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) using a high pressure process via free radical polymerization. Its manufacture employs the same method today. The EPA estimates 5.7% of LDPE ( resin identification code 4) is recycled in the United States. Despite competition from more modern polymers, LDPE continues to be an important plastic grade. In 2013 the worldwide LDPE market reached a volume of about US$33 billion.
