Rugby Union In Tuvalu
Rugby union is played in Tuvalu. Unlike most South Pacific islands, rugby union is largely played on an informal basis alongside association football, which is the main sport played by Tuvaluans. The Tuvalu Rugby Union, an organising body for Rugby Union, was established in 2007 with the intention of forming a national team. Tuvalu National Rugby Sevens Team
The Tuvalu national rugby sevens team (Tuvalu 7s) participates in the Rugby Sevens competitions at the Pacific Games and the Oceania Sevens Championship. The Tuvalu Rugby Union (TRU) was established in 2007 as the organising body for Rugby Union in Tuvalu. The TRU selects the members of the Tuvalu 7s. Tuvalu is a lower ranking rugby nation, with the Tuvalu 7s focusing on skills development. Funafuti is the capital of the island nation of Tuvalu. It has a population of 6,320 people (2017 census), and so it has more people than the rest of Tuvalu combined, with approximately 60% of the population. It consists of a narrow sweep of land between wide, encircling a large lagoon (''Te Namo'') long and wide. The average depth of the Funafuti lagoon is about 20 fathoms (36.5 metres or 120 feet). The Tuvalu Games is a multi-sport event, much like the Pacific Games (although on a much smaller scale), with participation exclusively from islands around Tuvalu. History The Games began in 2008, hosted in the capital, Funafuti. All 8 islands can participate and compete between each island in events such as track and field events, football, badminton and other games.
