Rugby League European Shield
The European Championship B (formerly the European Shield), is a rugby league football competition. The competition is organised by the European Rugby League and is the second tier of the European Championship competition. It was first held in 2006 as the Central Europe Development Tri-Nations. History The competition was first held in 2006 under the name of Central Europe Development Tri Nations, with the aim of developing teams in central and eastern Europe. Up until 2009 the competition was made up of only three teams, until it was expanded in 2010 to six teams split into two conferences - East and West. In 2011 the competition was reverted back to three teams with Norway and Malta making their debuts. The competition was expanded again the year after though with four teams playing in winter between 2012–13. European Rugby League
The European Rugby League (ERL) (previously Rugby League European Federation (RLEF)) is the umbrella body for nations playing the sport of rugby league football across Europe. In the absence of other continental federations, ERL also controls rugby league in North America the Middle East and Africa through its sub-branches Americas Rugby League and Middle East-Africa Rugby League. History The federation was founded January 2003 following an initiative between Richard Lewis, Executive Chairman of Great Britain's Rugby Football League (RFL) and his French counterpart Jean Paul Ferre of the French Rugby League Federation (FFR). 2009 European Shield
The 2009 Shield featured the same teams as participated in 2008. In the 2009 fixture, Italy became the first nation to win back-to-back European Shields. As a result they were drafted into the 2009 European Cup, following Russia's withdrawal from that competition. Women's Rugby League European Championship
The Women's Rugby League European Championship is an international rugby league football tournament for European national teams first held in 2022. History The creation of Women's Rugby League European Championships was announced by the European Rugby League, ERL in May 2022 with the inaugural edition taking place between June and October the same year, 87 years after the creation of the Rugby League European Championship, men's version of the tournament. The tournament would consist of an A and B league with promotion and relegation between them, as the men's tournament has done since 2020. Rugby League European Championship D
European Championship D is the fourth tier of the rugby league European Championships and was founded in 2020. History The inaugural tournament was in 2021. The competition was intended to be scrapped in 2023 due to expansion of Euro A and Euro B, however this never materialised. In March 2025, the European Rugby League (ERL) announced the return of the tournament for Euro B, C, and D, with the competition returning to a three team per division competition. Competing nations were reseeded based off Rank, with the 2025 and 2026 tournaments confirmed. 2021 Rugby League European Championship B
The 2020 Rugby League European Championships were a series of international rugby league tournament that were scheduled to place in October and November 2020. The tournaments were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Background A restructured European Championship system was announced in January 2020, with Euro A to be contested by six teams across two pools. Euro B and C remained a three-team competition, while a Euro D was introduced for the first time consisting of four teams. COVID-19 cancellations and aftermath In July 2020, the top tier tournament was cancelled in due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with postponement to 2021 was not possible due to participating teams competing in the 2021 Men's Rugby League World Cup (which iself was eventually postponed to 2022 due to the pandemic). 2018 Rugby League European Championship B
The 2018 Rugby League European Championship B (also known as Euro B) was ninth edition of the Rugby League European Championship B and acted as the second phase of European qualifying to the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. The series involved three teams in pool play and took place in October 2018. The two highest ranked teams, Russia and Spain, advanced to the European play-off. In August 2019, Russia withdrew from the play-off tournament and were replaced by Serbia. In early 2008 it was announced that Italy had replaced Serbia in the European Shield. Serbia were elevated to a higher level with Russia and Lebanon after winning the 2007 shield.
