Rugby Australia Ltd, previously named Australian Rugby Union Limited and Australian Rugby Football Union Limited, is an Australian company operating the premier rugby union competition in Australia and teams. It has its origins in 1949. It is a member of World Rugby. Rugby Australia has eight member unions, representing each state and the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. Oceania Rugby, previously known as the Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU), is the regional governing body for rugby union in Oceania. It was founded in 2000 to represent the interests of Oceania rugby within World Rugby, the international governing body. It presently encompasses fourteen full members and two associate members. Wallabies (rugby Union)
The Australia men's national rugby union team, nicknamed the Wallabies, is the representative men's national team in the sport of rugby union for Australia. The Wallabies first played at Sydney in 1899, winning their first test match against the touring British Isles team. Australia has competed in all ten Men's Rugby World Cups, winning the final on two occasions and also finishing as runner-up twice. Australia beat England at Twickenham in the final of the 1991 Rugby World Cup and won again in 1999 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff when their opponents in the final were France. The Wallabies also compete annually in The Rugby Championship (formerly the Tri-Nations), along with southern hemisphere counterparts Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa. Mark Arbib
Mark Victor Arbib (born 9 November 1971) is an Australian sports administrator and executive, a former Australian Labor Party, Labor Party politician and trade unionist. In 2015, he joined Australian Athletics, Athletics Australia where he served as President for six years. In 2016, Arbib was elected as an executive board member to the Australian Olympic Committee. In April 2025, Arbib was announced as the next CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee, commencing in May 2025. The Northern Territory Rugby Union, or NTRU, is the governing body for the sport of rugby union within the Northern Territory in Australia. It is a member of Rugby Australia. The Northern Territory Rugby Union manages competitions in several age groups and divisions, involving clubs from Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, and Nhulunbuy. The NTRU also hosts the annual Hottest 7s tournament in Darwin, which draws Rugby 7s teams from around Australia and overseas and awards prize money to the winners. The ACT and Southern NSW Rugby Union is the governing body for rugby union in the Australian Capital Territory and southern regions of New South Wales. The union is represented by one team in the Super Rugby competition, the Brumbies. The ACT is also home to the Canberra Vikings in the National Rugby Championship. The Tasmanian Rugby Union, or TRU, is the Sports governing body, governing body for the sport of rugby union within the state of Tasmania in Australia. The TRU was established in 1933. It is a member and founding union of Rugby Australia. Currently, the Tasmanian Rugby Union holds a variety of competitions for male and female players, in several age groups and divisions. The Western Australia Rugby Union (RugbyWA) is the Sports governing body, governing body of rugby union in Western Australia. The organisation develops and fosters rugby in Western Australia, from junior level to professional level. As of 2019, more than 35,000 people played rugby union in Western Australia across 36 clubs and 377 teams.
