Rudy Salas (musician)
Rudy Salas (5 January 1948 – 29 December 2020) was a musician who was a member of the group El Chicano. He was also the co-founder of the L.A. Latin R&B band, Tierra. Along with his brother Steve, he was a major part of the Eastside sound from the mid 1960s. History Rudy was raised in East Los Angeles. In the early days he did not speak Spanish. He and his brother picked up the harmonies from his mother and uncle who would sing at family gatherings. Taking what he learned from his mother, he and his brother started playing neighborhood fiestas. In the early to mid 1960s, the brothers were spotted by Mario Paniagua a leader of The Percussions, Jaguars. When Rudy was about age 11, he appeared on "Where Lovers Go" by the Jaguars. Not long after that, Rudy and Steve recorded singles for Eddie Davis's Faro label as The Salas Brothers. Later Salas joined groups such as El Chicano and Maya. El Chicano
El Chicano was an American brown-eyed soul group from Los Angeles, California, whose style incorporated various modern music genres including rock, funk, soul, blues, jazz, and salsa. The group's name was from Chicano, a term for United States citizens of typically Mexican descent. History El Chicano, originally formed by Freddie Sanchez under the name The VIP's arose during a period of increasing Chicano consciousness in America. Their initial hit, "Viva Tirado", was a jazzy soul rock rendition of Gerald Wilson's original song about a bullfighter. The song did very well on Los Angeles radio and remained #1 for thirteen straight weeks. Other notable tracks recorded by El Chicano are the funky "Tell Her She's Lovely" as well as a cover of Van Morrison's 1967 hit, "Brown Eyed Girl". Tierra (band)
Tierra is an American Latin R&B band, originally from Los Angeles, California, United States, that was first established in 1972 by former El Chicano members Rudy Salas (guitar) and his brother Steve Salas (vocals). The other original members were Bobby Loya , Bobby Navarrete ( reeds), Joey Guerra (keyboards), Steve Falomir (bass guitar), Philip Madayag ( drums), and Andre Baeza (percussion). Their biggest hit was the 1980 remake of The Intruders' 1967 hit " Together", written by Gamble & Huff, which reached No. 18 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and No. 9 on the US '' Billboard'' R&B chart. It was a number one record on Los Angeles radio. Bobby Espinosa
Bobby Espinosa (April 29, 1949-February 27, 2010) was an influential and important part of the Latin rock scene in Los Angeles from the late 1960s to the 2000s. He was a founding member of El Chicano. Background Espinosa was born on April 29, 1949, in Los Angeles County. At a young age he was influenced by Salsa music in a big way. His parents, especially his mother would dance to Tito Puente. Death Having been ill for some time, Espinosa died on February 27, 2010, aged 60, at White Memorial hospital in East Los Angeles. He was survived by his son Bobby Espinosa Jr. and daughter Reyna Espinosa, six grandchildren as well as other family members that include a brother and sister. Musical career Espinosa was said to have his own unique sound. He had a percussive approach to playing the Hammond B-3 organ for which he is recognized by some of his peers, people and fans from Los Angeles. He is regarded as an icon in the Chicano community. Chicano Rock Musicians
Chicano or Chicana is a chosen identity for many Mexican Americans in the United States. The label ''Chicano'' is sometimes used interchangeably with ''Mexican American'', although the terms have different meanings. While Mexican-American identity was related to encouraging assimilation into White American society and separating the community from the African-American political struggle, Chicano identity emerged among anti-assimilationist youth. Some belonged to the Pachuco subculture, and claimed the term (which had previously been a classist and racist slur). The term ''Chicano'' was widely reclaimed by ethnic Mexicans in the 1960s and 1970s to express political empowerment, ethnic solidarity, and pride in being of Indigenous descent (with many using the Nahuatl language), diverging from the more assimilationist ''Mexican American'' term.
