Rudy Salas (musician)
Rudy Salas (5 January 1949 – 29 December 2020) was a musician who was a member of the group El Chicano. He was also the co-founder of the L.A. Latin R&B band, Tierra. Along with his brother Steve, he was a major part of the Eastside sound from the mid 1960s. History Rudy was raised in Lincoln Heights. In the early days he did not speak Spanish. He and his brother picked up the harmonies from his mother and uncle who would sing at family gatherings. Taking what he learned from his mother, he and his brother started playing neighborhood fiestas. In the early to mid 1960s, the brothers were spotted by Mario Paniagua a leader of The Percussions, Jaguars. When Rudy was about age 11, he appeared on "Where Lovers Go" by the Jaguars. Not long after that, Rudy and Steve recorded singles for Eddie Davis's Faro label as The Salas Brothers. Later Salas joined groups such as El Chicano and Maya. Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles
Lincoln Heights is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, California, United States. It was originally called "East Los Angeles" from 1873 to 1917. El Chicano
El Chicano was an American brown-eyed soul group from Los Angeles, California, whose style incorporated various modern music genres including rock, funk, soul, blues, jazz, and salsa. The group's name came from the word Chicano, a term for United States citizens of typically Mexican descent. History El Chicano, originally formed by Freddie Sanchez under the name The VIP's arose during a period of increasing Chicano consciousness in America. Their initial hit, "Viva Tirado", was a jazzy soul rock rendition of Gerald Wilson's original song about a bullfighter. The song did very well on Los Angeles radio and remained #1 for thirteen straight weeks. Other notable tracks recorded by El Chicano are the funky "Tell Her She's Lovely" as well as a cover of Van Morrison's 1967 hit " Brown Eyed Girl". Tierra (band)
Tierra is an American Latin R&B band, originally from Los Angeles, California, United States, that was first established in 1972 by former El Chicano members Rudy Salas (guitar) and his brother Steve Salas (vocals). The other original members were Bobby Loya, Bobby Navarrete ( reeds), Joey Guerra (keyboards), Steve Falomir (bass guitar), Philip Madayag (drums), and Andre Baeza (percussion). Their biggest hit was the 1980 remake of The Intruders' 1967 hit "Together", written by Gamble & Huff, which reached No. 18 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and No. 9 on the US ''Billboard'' R&B chart. It was a number one record on Los Angeles radio. Bobby Espinosa
Bobby Espinosa (April 29, 1949 – February 27, 2010) was an influential and important part of the Latin rock scene in Los Angeles from the late 1960s to the 2000s. He was a founding member of El Chicano. Background Espinosa was born on April 29, 1949, in Los Angeles County. At a young age he was influenced by Salsa music in a big way. His parents, especially his mother would dance to Tito Puente. Death Having been ill for some time, Espinosa died on February 27, 2010, aged 60, at White Memorial hospital in East Los Angeles. He was survived by his son Bobby Espinosa Jr. and daughter Reyna Espinosa, six grandchildren as well as other family members that include a brother and sister. Musical career Espinosa was said to have his own unique sound. Chicano (masculine form) or Chicana (feminine form) is an ethnic identity for Mexican Americans that emerged from the Chicano Movement. In the 1960s, ''Chicano'' was widely reclaimed among Hispanics in the building of a movement toward political empowerment, ethnic solidarity, and pride in being of Indigenous peoples of Mexico, Indigenous descent (with many Nahuatl language in the United States, using the Nahuatl language or Chicano names, names).
