Ruby Falls (band)
Ruby Falls was a New York City-based math rock band active from 1992 to 2000. Later in their history, the band consisted of entirely female musicians, leading M.R. Newmark of ''PopMatters'' to describe them as "the only all-female math-rock band of any significance". History Ruby Falls was formed in 1992. The band's founding members were lead vocalist and bass guitarist Cynthia Nelson, vocalists and guitarists Jennifer Rogers and Letha Rodman, and drummer Andrew Bordwin. In 1994, Bordwin left the band and was replaced by Rogers' sister, Laura. In the same year, Nelson was featured in the film '' Half-Cocked'', and Ruby Falls contributed the song "Dusty" to its soundtrack. Later in 1994, Nelson took a hiatus from Ruby Falls, which continued playing without her until she rejoined the band in 1996. Math Rock
Math rock is a style of Alternative rock, alternative and indie rock with roots in bands such as King Crimson and Rush (band), Rush. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), counterpoint, odd time signatures, and extended chords. Bearing similarities to post-rock, math rock has been described as the "opposite side of the same coin". Opting for a "rock music, rockier" approach to songwriting and timbres, the style is often performed by music ensemble, smaller ensembles which emphasize the role of the guitar. The Naysayer
The Naysayer was a country-rock band founded in 2000 by singer-songwriter Anna Padgett, the band's only permanent member, and former Retsin drummer Cynthia Nelson. The band released four studio albums before disbanding in 2006. History Padgett and Nelson first met at Wesleyan University, where Padgett was studying dance art history, in the early 1990s. Post-graduation they became close friends when they started working at the same restaurant in New York City. After Padgett moved to Los Angeles, she later reunited with Nelson in New York, where they began practicing with each other. The Naysayer later arose from their collaborations despite their lack of intention of starting a band. Half-Cocked (film)
''Half-Cocked'' is a cult music road movie, made in 1994 in Louisville, Nashville and Chattanooga. The movie tells the story of a group of high school teens who steal a van full of music equipment and pretend to be a band, called "Truckstop" (played by the band Rodan) in order to stay on the road. When the band starts playing gigs, their sound is largely inconsistent and incoherent, however, over time, the band becomes increasingly competent in their musicianship. The film puts much emphasis on the indie/alternative rock subculture. Many notable indie rock bands, such as Rodan, Polvo, Grifters, Freakwater, Versus, Slant 6, Unwound, Helium, Sleepyhead, Crain, and Ruby Falls are featured in the movie. Members of Rodan and Grifters play in the movie as well as acting. It had a small run on VHS and was unavailable for years until its 2007 re-release on DVD.
